My Kuro Project

Post by Craig010 » Sat May 23, 2020 7:09 pm

Hi guys,

Thought it was about time I put together a little thread of my own, to keep track of the cars progress through my ownership and see how it changes as I become better acquainted with it. My aim is to improve the reliability, get her running and driving better and make a few modifications to help for when I take her to the track a couple of times a year.

A little background - I bought the car in Feb of this year for £1,500 (Which I though was reasonable given the condition). It's a 2007 Kuro (#148) and had 84,800 miles on it at the time. It had just been MOT'd, and looked to have been reasonably well taken car of (not upto enthusiast standards, but better than your average owner judging by the paperwork I had with the car - there was even an article relating to the workings of the rotary!).

So far it's been a pretty good car. My main aim was to find a car with the least rust possible for my budget, and having been underneath it a few times already, she seems to be solid aside from some surface rust which will get some attention later on in the year. With the mileage already on the engine, and no history of a rebuild, I'm sure it'll need to be rebuilt at some point, but she starts great hot & cold currently and I'm just going to keep it going as long as possible before the inevitable (hopefully I got a good one!).

I've had a couple of problems with the car so far (in 700 miles!). The first is a jerkiness that "feels like the engine is bouncing about" according to my better half . Been like it since I bought it. I've looked at the engine mounts and thier not sitting low, so I need to take them off and give them a look over.
The second is that my oil cooler lines failed, so I fitted the braided hoses from the supplier found through the club, which I'm really happy with.
Yesterday my EML popped on with Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold, which is wierd because just the day before, I purchased a new 100 Cel cat from RRP! I suspected the killer Cat on it was on its way out anyway. Also had to fix the driver heated seat and a couple of other small irritations.

Some people would be ready to throw in the towel with problems after such little use, but it's gotten under my skin, and I know with a little work it will be a great weekend toy as the body is pretty tidy.

Hope to update this with some new bits and pieces soon, and I'll aim to document what parts I fit with some pictures and such, but for now I'll leave you with a couple of pictures!

Nice one,you seem to have it sorted by thinking of the bodywork over other things. mechanical things are easily fixed, bodywork, not so.

Now this I would like to see!

Anyway, today some goodies arrived (which is great timing as today is my Birthday!)

Here is the new MKIII RRP coil upgrade kit. Really impressed with the quality look of these coils, even down the the packaging. It all looks very professional.

_20200524_091528.JPG

And this is my new RRP 100 Cel CAT. Another nicely made piece, and looking forward to seeing what difference this makes to the car (in both sound and performance).

Will be fitting this little lot next week, so I'll get some pictures up of the fitting, and let you know what differences they make to the car. Really looking forward to getting them on! I may upload a video to show the sound difference the new CAT makes on an otherwise stock system (if I can figure out how!!).

That's all for now, hopefully more updates soon!

Hi Craig, i am sure you will have thought of this, but make sure the car has not been mapped for 585 coils. i have the mk2 coils and had to have my 585 setting mapped out,but maybe the mk3's are compatible, rob.

Thanks Rob, but the car is running standard (although cheepie) coils ATM, so no risk of that :thumleft:

So today's task was to get the car cleaned up ready for polishing later in the week. Gave it a pre wash, followed by a thorough contact wash, and then went over the whole car with some Bilt Hamber Autoclay. Amazing the amount of stuff that was pulled out of the paint, and wasn't difficult to do at all.

Clay at the start:
_20200525_135918.JPG

Clay after just the bonnet:
_20200525_135945.JPG

And after just the N/S front wing:
_20200525_140014.JPG

Paint feels so much smoother now!! Looking forward to seeing how she looks after a good machine polish now.

Well, yesterday was a big day.

Fitted my new RRP MKIII ignition system upgrade (coils, leads & plugs), new drive belts, and a new RRP 100 Cel CAT.
_20200528_060423.JPG

Hardest bit was removing the old Killer CAT as one of the bolts to the manifold just rounded off, and of course it was the hardest one to get to! The old CAT had started to internally disintegrate and make it's way into the rear section, as you can see below:
_20200528_060647.JPG

The quality of these RRP coils cannot be overstated, the weight and size of them alone is impressive. I've taken some comparison shots for you to see what I mean:
_20200528_072430.JPG
_20200528_072405.JPG
_20200528_072339.JPG

Coils were easy to fit and bolted right in, no messing. Plugs and leads were a bit fiddly, but that is just due to placement on the car.
_20200528_060833.JPG

All in all, I'm really impressed with all the bits, and it's truly transformed the car. It runs so much smoother now, and there is a significant increase in power (mostly due to the coils I think). It's like driving a different car. Also, it sounds much better with the new cat section, even through the stock rear box. You can hear that signature rotary sound quite a bit more, but without any drone or rasp.

I'll try and get some before and after videos up to show the sound difference soon!

Nice job.
It’s not fun doing exhaust stuff on your driveway or did you have a pit/lift?
I thought the RRP MK3 coils were black, not sure I’m keen on that colour in terms of under bonnet blingness.

No lift unfortunately, just a pair or Ramps and axle stands... Just makes it more difficult as you say.

They're a mid grey colour, it looks lighter in the pictures. To be honest, you can't really see them with the intake & airbox in place anyway, so I'm not that bothered. All that matters to me is that they work!

With those coils and leads on that’s one area you won’t have to worry about for some considerable time!

You're lucky.

SteveD and I had his catback off and hitting it with a length of 2x4 to try and get the broken bits of cat out, and still couldn't get it flowing freely

Got around to machine polishing it today. Paint was harder than I was expecting, though I was using a pretty mild combination. Took a few hours, but got there in the end. Here are the results:

Before - Pretty hazy and quite scratched up (Camera doesn't pick it all up):
DSC_0228_copy_3024x2268.jpg

After - Not perfect, but pretty clear now. Looks so much better - I love this colour:

Thanks guys, you can't beat a clean car, especially a black metallic. I would not like to have done it by hand though, this took me about 5 hours by machine. IMO a machine is well worth the investment if you want to get substantially better results, plus save a lot of time and energy (hand polishing is hard work!).

I was using Scholl S20 Black (a single stage polish), with Orange Chemical Guys Hexlogic Quantum pads (4" and 6") on a DAS 6 dual action machine. Finished it off with a coat of Meguiar's Ultimate liquid wax.

Cool cool. I'll have to invest in a machine polisher then. Most Das 6 DA's look somewhat affordable to me which isn't too bad. Just another tool to add to the ever growing list.
