So... Painting calipers today it is... Started with the carriers as that seemed like a good way of gauging wether the little hanging rig I made up was good or not.
Spoiler:
Its not good at all.
But anyway have some half successful caliper carriers in gloss black... I missed a few stupid spots on two of them... Which I didn't notice until the final coat. :( But ah well see how they come out in a few hours.

First coat:

Final coat:

Decided that the banjo bolts I have won't clean up decently enough for actually painting the heads... So along with the other hardware I'm replacing anyway I'll add banjo bolts to the list.

End result: 75% success...

One front caliper carrier completely coated:

Two rear calipers completely coated (albeit may have to add another coat to one of them after curing):

And one front caliper carrier rookie mistaked:

Fixing the missed section currently.. Not sure if I can manage to fix the mixed spot next to the thread or not. Hmm.

All in all this was my first time using spray paint.. And I may have been a bit too liberal with the first couple of coats/a tad close to some places.. But I'm pretty happy with the result overall. :) The calipers are getting painted tomorrow. Got to figure out how to protect the cylinders from paint. And I'm just putting the older bleed nipples and banjo bolts in to protect the associated threads. Though the bleed nipples are in serviceable order so I'll probably cover up the important bit and give them a blast of paint too. :p

Looking good! If you have asking tape put it around the seal for the piston. Then just keep going untill the piston is covered. Don't copy me... Take your time.

Could do that yeah. And yeah if anything I've learnt taking the time to make slow sweeping passes at the right distance is super important. Can't wait to get them on the car though with the wheels being refurbed soonish I hope... Maybe? lol...

Check the bleed nipples before refitting. Not only should they be undamaged (nuts not rounded) and fairly rust free, but the air holes just above the point of the cone must be round. If they're even slightly oval this shows that they're been overtightened and are only good for the bin.

Previously overtightened nipples are near the top of the list for brake bleeding issues.

Will do Dave. I was considering this rebuild kit:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mazda-RX8-Fr ... SwsQJd-f69

Just as an all encompassing "do it all in one go and its done" type deal. Obviously if some things don't require replacing that would be great but still quite tempted to just for the sake of mind.

Though I'm not sure what the circled o rings etc are for?

Might be worth looking at speed bleeder nipples if your doing it solo. Or the kit I got ezibleed has been super useful.

I'll probably have my friend that rents the shed at my house help me bleed everything I think John. :p Makes life easier when you have a qualified mechanic on hand ahah.

Also as if to be annoying my mums not leaving the house today... So no baking brake parts just yet... Dammit.

Ahah. I would never get away with that. Plus me cooking for her would raise questions Rob. I can wait until tomorrow. Just out getting some food and then I'm hitting up the calipers themselves.

So callipers hopefully completely coated as I ran out of paint right as I got to the final front calliper... Which is kinda lucky? But I feel like the paint should've gone a lot further than what it did... Too heavy handed me thinks.

Pre painting, cylinders of the fronts masked off (no pistons in currently) and a sheet of scrunched up newspaper to keep as much paint out as possible:

After the final coat:

Hopefully this time I've not missed anything as badly as I did on the carriers. 3 Hours to touch dry and then hopefully cure them tomorrow. Going to need to buy more VHT anyway as I intend on cleaning up the rear brake shield things whatever they're called.

Sooo looks like I'm buying another tin of paint in the near future. There's nothing super badly missed just a small part here and there that I'd rather do before going to the effort of taking the calipers on the car off the car to put these on the car to then have to sort niggly bits. otherwise I'm pretty happy with the results. Some lessons learnt. Make sure to maintain the distance suggested away from what you're spraying. Figure out in advanced the best way of getting coverage to every part.. Kinda hard to do on the setup I had but.. I'll say 85% success.

Parts have been baked for the hour. Smells not too bad should hopefully air out before my Mum gets home. :p Will take some proper pics once everythings cooled down. Its also a sunny day here so I'm going to go remove the drivers side arch liners finally.

So with a proper inspection... 2 Callipers are very well covered and doubt they need any more paint maybe just a small touch up at worst. (The two closest to the short edge of the table.) The other two have a few completely missed spots which is annoying but was basically down to the light I was working in and how I had things setup. The carriers are in definite need of a respray. Mostly just from not getting 100% coverage in some spots.

Otherwise I quite like them in black... And can't wait to see them on the car once they're rebuilt and after the wheel refurb.

Used VHT Gloss Black John. Oh I do... I don't mind spending a bit of time now saving me time in the future.

So whilst it was still nice outside I figured I would go and get the drivers side wheel arch liners finally. This time with some picks the stupid fixings came out a lot easier. Some where still sacrificed but thats life.
Spoiler:
Rear drivers side wheel well:

Front drivers side wheel well:
Image
Image
Image
Also noticed some bubbling on my drivers side frong wing... I'm now too tempted to say sod it and go for a full front respray with as good of a match and blend as possible...

Also managed to get a picture of my definitely not OEM cat...:

Image

I really need to save for a battery and get the car moving so I can move it to get better access as it stands its a bit of a pain sorting drivers side stuff. Aside from that... It looks like I've got a good lot of rust removal/protection to do. Thankfully its all surface rust really. Still going to be a big undertaking if Johns attempt taught me anything.

Near future plans: Cat off and bashed out for a ghetto decat. Because it may as well just be basically a mid pipe anyway.

They actually came on the car aha. I quite like how they ride tbh. Hoping to swap them out for PZ suspension sometime in the future. Way wayyyy down the future. And thanks.. I saw some of the bits I missed and felt kinda eh about them. But should be sortable at least. :p

Not dropping the rear subframe will make it easier and harder. The access is great but replacing it isn't.
