I saw a patent a few years ago of a electric-powered differential.

The diff worked as usual with an electric motor fitted to the front, and a shortened prop shaft
This had the advantage of not changing the unsprung weight or forces at the wheels.

There was a positive response from some of the automotive engineering groups, at the time, but I can't find any references to it ever turning into a product

There was a prototype, based on a Dodge Ram pickup, who's propshaft obviously spins slower than ours.

I saw something similar whilst exploring other options for mild hybrid.
Unfortunately now can't find it....
