HELP COMPRESSION TEST RELIABILITY!

Post by Ginger505 » Fri May 18, 2018 11:51 am

Morning

So as I mentioned in a previous post I am going to see an 8 later today and the seller has not done a compression test.

Since it is London there seem to be far and few places which offer this service and I found someone who has the kit and does it as a hobby for £80

Now this seems very steep considering in some places the service costs £65 and you are getting some kind of assurance and print out certificate of results whereas this guy all I can do is take a pic on my phone of the reading.

Obviously the seller can’t really use this to assure other potential buyers so it leaves me little in the the way of a bargaining chip.

I need to ask you guys, coming from a lab background I know that the equipment can’t alwaus be trusted. Is it possible that this guys compression tester isn’t up to the mark?

What would you do in this situation?

Thanks ! :thumleft:

As above, I know Luke at MRS uses a proper Mazda tester and London may just about be within the area he is prepared to travel so I would recommend him.

buy a Gunsons compression tester for about £18, unscrew the 1 way valve in the end with a tyre valve key

use that with your assistant cranking whilst you watch the gauge for each 'bounce' the needle should reach the same spot for all 3 chambers and be over 6 bar at least
don't forget to pull the 20A fuel pump fuse too and if you're really thorough also use a scan tool to monitor the engine cranking speed and correct it back to 250 rpm with this site

I'd second speaking to Luke, I've had him do it on a few of my cars and as above genuine Mazda tester used.

Haha Matt I’m sorry but the amount of detail there did make me laugh, there’s no way I can do that and reassure myself I have done a good job, but thanks for your faith in me!

Thanks I’ve gotten in touch with Luke let’s hope he isn’t too busy to reply I know I’ve left it a little late
