Re: Be Careful out there
As above but sat mine back in 1975!!!! The best skill any driver can learn is to constantly be aware of the speed limits, road conditions, traffic conditions and to drive “ahead” by at least two cars. Speed camera detectors, sat nav camera reporting apps etc; aren’t necessary if you are aware of everything above and more.
I think one of the best deterrents to speeding is a drivers own dashcam recording their speed because if stopped and the police ask to see the video if you were speeding it will be on there.

Re: Be Careful out there
I suspect that driving instructor may have be retired for some time, as Police Advanced Driving Standards were already frowning on engine braking when I did my instruction in 2007. I kept getting my wrist slapped for using engine braking and gears to slow rather than braking.
The Instructor never came up with a sensible explanation and I don't think he actually agreed with the new regime, he was just told the say "engine for go, brakes to slow". I suggested that it might be a reflection of the proportion of automatics being used as Police pursuit cars, that fitted this different paradigm.
Strangely, we had to do the course in a manual, so I took along a Focus ST-3, which they'd not seen in the flesh, and caused some excitement.

Re: Be Careful out there
I was taught to brake to slow down and only change gear to an appropriate gear at the last moment as working down through each gear Involved taking a hand off the steering wheel which reduced the control you have over the steering!

Re: Be Careful out there
The idea of using engine braking was to say go from a 60 zone to 30 zone without using the brakes, using your judgment and foresight to control the car instead.
Hitting 30 on the clock as you passed the 30 marker was the target for example.
My 192 didn't have much in the way of aiding the slowing, but my present 231 has significantly more engine braking ability, I am guessing it's down to gearing.

Re: Be Careful out there
I done a speed awareness course about five years ago.
What surprised me the most was when asked by the Drive Tech guys
One woman said I can stop in one cars length.
When asked to explain herself.
Well when I’m following a car on the motorway at 70+ and tailgating I can stop without hitting the car in front
So that’s one car length.
I kid you not.

Re: Be Careful out there
I think the engine braking thing refers back to the days of drum brakes and you needed the braking effect of the engine to compliment the brakes as they were woefully inadequate

Re: Be Careful out there
One from my Drivetec course they supposedly teach learners these days is to be in the gear according to the speed limit.
so 20mph = 2nd
30mph = 3rd
40mph = 4th
Played around dong this in the PUG and it does kind of make you want to stick to that speed otherwise engine is overrevving.
(no so much in RX8 )

Re: Be Careful out there
But, but my 911 will do nearly 40 in first so I really don`t need the other 5 gears?

Re: Be Careful out there
When I got caught doing 80 I was offered a speed course, I was glad not to get the points or fine, although £86 for the course...when I got there I realised they had two sessions a day with 26 people on it, quite a little moneymaker for two ex coppers...[edited] masons

Re: Be Careful out there
In many countries, "a brown envelope" is how you make sure you don't get a speeding ticket - apparently
