5. No fuel tank leaks.
6. I always completely fill my tank.

I have followed the Spin doctor’s advice today, and emailed mmukassistance@mazdaeur.com to ask for my recall to be removed as my fuel basket was updated with a bigger pump and fresh lock rings when I fitted a return fuel line. I asked the dealer to acknowledge this but they haven’t so I’ve messaged Mazda Europe. Concerned VOSA safety notice will mean MOT station can’t pass until removed.

1. Have you received this recall notice? YES
2. Have you had the work completed? ‘YES BY ME/ENGINEER’
3. If you have had the recall completed, which dealership did the work and roughly when? TAKEN TO BRINDLEY MAZDA WOLVERHAMPTON, AIRBAG WORK COMPLETED ONLY (SEE BELOW) HAVE ANOTHER RX8 TO BOOK IN TOO.
4. If you have received the recall and not had the work done, what is your reason? MAZDA DEALER WANTED TO INSTALL NEW BASKET, FUEL PUMP AND FILTER PLUS LOCK RINGS. I HAVE A MORE POWERFUL PUMP AND RETURN FUEL LINE FITTED (REW TURBO) AND THE SERVICE MANAGER WOULDN’T SWAP IN MY CURRENT PUMP AND FITTINGS (STRAIGHT SWAP PUMP, ONE HOLE TO DRILL IN LID AND RE-FIT BULKHEAD FITTING. I OFFERED TO DO THE ADAPTATION WORK ON THE NEW COMPONENTS BUT SO FAR FALLEN ON DEAF EARS). I SUSPECT THE RECEPTIONIST ISN’T PASSING THIS ON TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AS I CAN’T SPEAK TO HIM.
5. If you have had the work done, have you experienced any leaks? N/A
6. If you have had the work done and not experienced any leaks, have you completely filled your tank at least once? N/A
7. Did you experience any other issues, such as fuel the gauge reading incorrectly? If so, please give details N/A

I am emailing Mazda Europe to try to get the VOSA recall removed as ‘not required’ for the Turbo car as it was completed in 2018. Or to help me get the replacement components which the dealer ordered and prepare the fuel basket so all the plastics can be swapped for new.

Another issue for me is that on early RX8s (03/04) there was a fire safety recall and a fuel tank shield was fitted. In 05 these were fitted as standard. When I checked my 53 plate car for recalls I queried this early recall and was told it was done in 2005 and ‘closed’. I explained to the dealer that the shield is now pretty much disintegrating and was told if it’s not a current recall campaign we can’t do anything. I think we should look to Mazda to reissue this recall; there can’t be that many cars on the road but those that are should have these recall shields checked periodically if they are so important.

3. HENDY EASTBOURNE JULY 2019
4. N/A
5. HAVE NOT USED CAR MUCH IN LAST YEAR AND FILLED TANK TO TOP LAST MONTH
6. N/A
7. NOT THAT I HAVE NOTICED

I am currently in discussion with the dealer who made the mistake of thinking I was a stupid female. I hit every one of their social media accounts as got fed up with the Service Manager who originally wouldn't take my call.
I have also got MazdaUk involved by going through their Twitter accounts and they are also investigating.
Have to take the car back to dealer on Wednesday so that they can investigate as it seems they don't believe me or my photos and video.
I will update once they have investigated.

Sorry if I'm late for the party. Mine is going to be a bit more convoluted than yes/no.

1. Have you received this recall notice?
Previous owner did.
2. Have you had the work completed?
Previous owner did, shortly before I bought the car.
3. If you have had the recall completed, which dealership did the work and roughly when?
Early 2018, Mazda Swansea.
4. If you have received the recall and not had the work done, what is your reason?
N/A
5. If you have had the work done, have you experienced any leaks?
Previous owner said they did, sent it back to Swansea to get it fixed. I bought the car shortly after in May 2018 and smelled petrol in the cabin. Took it to Romford Mazda, paid for a new seal that was apparently missing (June 2018). Mazda Swansea office refused any refund or compensation, according to their records they carried the work out out to the dot. Failed MOT in 2019 for fuel leak, rubber seal under fuel pump was apparently snapped, paid again for a new one (independent, non-Mazda related garage). No problems since.
6. If you have had the work done and not experienced any leaks, have you completely filled your tank at least once?
Yes, no problems since last MOT in May 2019.
7. Did you experience any other issues, such as fuel the gauge reading incorrectly? If so, please give details.
No.

Sorry to hear that tale. Sadly, I can't include your information in the data I'm collating as I might be double-counting. I have 3 Facebook reports of leaks where I do not have the dealership or dates involved and one of those could be your car reported by the previous owner. If you have details of the previous owner then please PM me with more info and I might be able to work out if yours is a new case :thumleft:

UPDATE: **SAFETY ALERT: Fuel Tank recall - Fuel Leaks & Other Issues"

Post by casey »

Thanks everyone for the very useful information you have provided to help the RX-8 owning community =D> .

In summary the picture emerging is very concerning:

Of 94 respondents, 69 have taken their car to Mazda dealers for the recall, and 15 of those owners (22%) reported fuel leaks after the work had been done.

The issue is not confined to any specific dealership, the problem arising from Inverness to Eastbourne.

It is also concerning that 12 respondents are choosing not to have this work done, having learned of the problems reported by other owners.

On behalf of all RX-8 Owners, a formal letter was sent yesterday by the RX-8 Owners Club to DVSA (formerly VOSA), copied to Mazda UK, expressing our concern at the number of RX-8's being handed back to owners with fuel tank leaks post this recall campaign work being carried out.

Our contention is that no car should be collected by an owner from a dealership with a leak in the fuel tank - pretty simple really. It's not for us to say how this should be achieved, but concern has been stated at the post-recall testing procedure defined by Mazda UK that the dealerships are required to perform.

BTW, I received another report of a fuel leak last night (via FB Messenger) complete with a video similar to mine with fuel pouring out. That makes 16 of 70 now, so 22% "failures" has now risen to 23%!

That's almost 1/4 just of what has been reported.. Nevermind those who haven't seen this/aren't in the OC etc..

Scary figures in reality.. 1 in 4 chance of your car having a very serious issue.

I've been thinking about how to relate my small sample responses to the entire population of recalled cars. I posted this on a Facebook group a short while ago, but revised a little after further thought.

Based on the "how many left" website, there are a total of 2,130 RX-8's (all models) licensed at end of Q2 2020, with a further 3,245 on SORN. Yes, more on SORN than on the road, possibly more than usual due to covid? However, the recall doesn't apply to all models, some on SORN won't be getting the recall done and some owners are refusing to get the work done due to the horror stories. I guess 5,000 recall notices is a good estimate, but probably less than half have had the work done to date (just my feeling on the matter, only DVSA will know for sure).

My sample is 94 responses (1.9% of population of recalled cars), 69 of which have had the work done (the rest scheduled, SORN'd or refusing) and 15 leaks from the 69, so 22% leaking.

If we assume that 2,500 cars have had the work done (guess) then 69 represents 2.7% of the population of cars that have had the work done, not a bad sample size. I accept my data may be biased as more people will tend to respond if they have an issue - those with no issue are more inclined not to bother. However, only last night another leak was reported to me, so now 16 from 70. On the other hand, I have a strong suspicion there are a number of owners driving around who have not filled their tank and may have a leak but are unaware??

On the other hand, I have a strong suspicion there are a number of owners driving around who have not filled their tank and may have a leak but are unaware??
Thats the worrying thing. Some people may not have filled it up enough to get a leak as of yet. So when a leak does happen it could be catastrophe! As leaks seem to happen at differing fuel levels. I'd hate to of filled up with a roasting hot cat persay... Get started off again and be unfortunate enough to have the fumes catch. Especially on the forecourt of a petrol station...

That's also assuming that there won't be a number of owners who will have a leak but either won't notice it for whatever reason, or won't be concerned enough to do something about it (God help them). Given the amount of drivers I see pottering around with a fuel cap open, wobbly wheel, or dragging exhaust etc I wouldn't set the bar very high.

Great work Malcolm, thanks for looking out for everyone.

This is really good work.

I am aiming to get my Rex back on the road within 8 weeks. Is there anything on a word or excel file that might warn the dealer that there are issues I will be aware of and so they should also be aware of them before they try the repairs?? I think it would need to be fairly short.....etc

Thanks

John
