Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
If anyone else has suggestions about what is causing the random extra noises from my exhaust (video posted Sat Feb 8th), I would really appreciate it.
Yes, very likely the internals of the exhaust system are falling apart, (it has sounded throaty for a while) but it is the extra, random noises ('knocks' and 'barks') that I do not recall hearing before. I'm wondering if they indicate any particular problem.
Thanks!

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Ok panic attack over. Went to try out my new key and nothing happened. So tried reprogramming and nothing ( the key press part didn't work). So I thought crap I am having to fork out £300 for a new key if I can still even get one.
Anyway I took the key apart again a few times in case I misplaced something and finally when I took apart the whole thing, buttons and everything and put it back together I could now see the red light when pressing all the buttons. The key worked straightaway on the car without reprogramming then.
In terms of taking it apart I saw a video which said be gentle with the first catch when you take the key off as it's fairly brittle and if it breaks you have to sellotape the key together. The latch on mine came apart with no drama. A gentle push on the catch whilst pulling on the key section.
The bugger I had was opening the fob section. Seems there are a few different designs and after watching a few videos online and scratching up my key inside, I found my key was a third variant which has a little slot ( on the right hand side if looking from above ), which will just fit a small flat screwdriver. A gentle lever here and the fob comes apart easily. Not obvious I thought and I'd pull the key apart to post a pic, but I'm not touching it again whilst it works! Hopefully won't have to for another decade....
Anyway thought I'd post in case someone is a bad at car DIY as me and needs help on the obvious things. If any buttons are not working it's worth opening it all up and reseating everything and it might solve things like it did for me.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
At our monthly meet last week Smedley (Roger) experienced the horrendous vibration that my car has from the NS rear from c55 upward that then after a few miles can magically disappear!
I had settled on it being the tyres develop long a flat spot whilst park that then disappears once the tyre is warm.
PhilR said to check the brakes which I finally got round to this morning and thanks to Dave2112 “lending” me two calipers from his old car I was able to simply remove my Calipers and fit his. Of course I hadn’t purchased a seal kit first so finding a ripped boot on one caliper was a potential issue but I was able to use one off my calipers, now the6 are a fun little item to fit!
With that done I then decided to remove the pistons from my calipers. DS just unscrewed and was pristine on the side. The PS one necessitated my 3/4” breaker bar to got it to unscrew! I think I may have found the cause of the vibration.
Just about to go for a drive so watch this space for either joy or despair.

Might be because it's hard to diagnose from the video. Does the engine idle smoothly? Or are those knocks and barks in time with spluttering at idle from the engine?johnbb99 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 9:46 pmIf anyone else has suggestions about what is causing the random extra noises from my exhaust (video posted Sat Feb 8th), I would really appreciate it.

Do you have a cat in the exhaust? If so I'd get it off and inspect it.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Warp at least one brake disc
Having a spirited back road drive home and come to a flooded road. Braking before the flood was smooth and progressive. Now there's a vibration when I apply the brakes that gets worse the harder I brake.

Could just be dirt on the brakes. Try a few hard stops. Carefully!

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Tried cleaning with brake pressure and also taking all 8 pads out and cleaning the surface with wet n' dry but that's not done anything. A side issue is I have potentially sticking rear brakes which may have exacerbated the issue by making the rear discs hotter than they should be. This is consistent with vibration without feeling it through the steering.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
Visited Rotary Revs (Motorsports and Performance Ltd), yesterday, having recently had a compression test done locally which seemed to show problems on the front rotor. Engine was rebuilt with RR late in 2017 and guarantee continued. The engine felt and sounded fine in use.
Ben suggested getting up to them for a dyno test to see the full reality of the engine condition as compression tests can have many variables, based on usage.
The engine was street ported with the rebuild, which will give lower readings on compression generally.
So dyno done, plus tuning. Getting 221bhp, so All of us delighted. After the dyno I asked for a compression test, which came in at mid to high 6's on all faces. Great with street port. They also spotted on the road test that alignment was out. Had fitted Bilstein B12 kit in 2016 and aligned following that. Re-aligned. One rear drop link very loose, so replaced. (Warwickshire pot-holes!!!)
So drove home and Wow, like a new car
Very much more planted and slightly sharper turn in. The power and acceleration phenominal. Happy man
Did notice though that they had a number of strange things on the work benches, called pistons?
They also had 5 or 6 Mustangs in and around for work. Diversification up and running.
Well done and MANY thanks Ben, Josh and all the team, for your knowledge, enthusiasm and professionalism.

I’ve got a set on the way. Been talking with them for a while about getting panels made up and been messing around with the modules for a year or so.
Was eventually thinking about batching up some and seeing if anyone wanted them on the forum.

Re: What have you done to your RX-8 today????
The bit that’s been slowing me down with the tail lights is a set back lense that allows you to mount your custom array of LEDs behind the oem strake. I really want to keep the strake as it’s an original design of the light and a cool feature to keep. And also you can build the strake lights into the whole design, as I showed in a video last year. But it is difficult to make that panel and have it look and fit well.
Getting rid of everything inside and just having a single panel is the easy way, but you can obviously still get cool designs.
When I’m done experimenting with the panels above I’ll probably move them on, so if anyone likes them keep your eyes open.

Just bought some front EBC blue stuff pads from EBC Brakes Direct for £95 saving £42 off the list price; that's my forum fees made back and then some.

Good to see Ranjan I will need to do the same soon with some yellow stuff.Ranjan wrote:Just bought some front EBC blue stuff pads from EBC Brakes Direct for £95 saving £42 off the list price; that's my forum fees made back and then some.

Today I took the front calipers off and checked all the sliders, cleaned and greased along with cleaning the anti squeal shims as they had got quite tight against the pads.
All cleaned down and re fitted. Did 14 miles to re bed after the car has been sat for some time and it seems to have removed the vibrations I was getting. I do suffer from the inside pad sticking and not moving in and out.
