And the compression results are in...
... Rotor 1 - 300rpm 5.1-5.25.3 250 rpm 4.4-4.5-4.5
... Rotor 2 - Comprssion too low to be registered.
Spoke to Dwayne about this, as he put it "it's one of the best condition 8's he's seen in a while, but the worst compression as well!". He's advised me not to premix or red line the car, said just to keep it mid range (3k in a 30) and hopefully carbon will clear. He reckons it is carbon build up as the last owner has probably never red lined it and it isn't even that high mileage (48k). I'll take his advice and hopefully it will slowly improve. Will go for another test after 6 months or so if the car still runs! Any more advice? Not the outcome I wanted but at least I know where I am with it!

Re: And the compression results are in...
I’m confused, won’t keeping the revs low cause more carbon buildup?
Hate to be negative but the engine sounds beyond the point of being saved by a regular Italian tune up, hopefully I will be proven wrong though.

Re: And the compression results are in...
What I thought. But he thinks that redlining it would do more harm than good. It will need a rebuild, but he said hopefully if it doesn't die before then, he can clean most of it up and replace seals which should fix it! I wasn't too sure about it but I'm in no position to go against his word.

Ok I see so more of a temporary solution than an attempt at a fix

Re: And the compression results are in...
Please shop around before agreeing to have him do your rebuild. I hope 'clean most of it up and replace the seals' weren't his words. Call RRP when you're ready to rebuild, or bigpete may even be able to fit a working second hand engine for you quickly.
Sorry you got those results. Hopefully once it's sorted you'll finally get to experience the engine at full power.
@Mark and Nick, he's at Silver Fern Performance.

I remember seeing something posted about "Silver Fern" on here many moons ago & it was pretty controversial

Dont want to say any ill words but,
Its VERY inlikely to improve by any significant amount if at all! Not sure about the advice but my advice is to get it rebuilt either by him or another specialist.
Hopefully at the moment the plates and housings are all in good condition being such a low mileage car you'll get a much better (and cheaper) engine if you just do it now.
Thats my advice

Re: And the compression results are in...
Aye, being an apprentice money definitely isn't that good (would take me a considerable amount of months to save enough for a worst case scenario rebuild). Definitely will rebuild this though, love it to bits! Maybe have to see about getting a credit card...

Re: And the compression results are in...
Right, well it would take me a while to save up anyway so I guess no harm it trying his idea? I'm not expecting a miracle, just hopefully enough for the engine to survive while I save up!Ryan Rotary Performance wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 4:44 pmDont want to say any ill words but,

Re: And the compression results are in...
With those results I'd be wondering if the rear stationary bearing has failed and the tail of the eccentric shaft is wobbling around, either that or there's a big score in one of rear iron surfaces.
Actually, the last time someone reported numbers like that it was finally tracked down to a broken spark plug, but then he did also have "a strange metallic clicking" which everyone was sure was the bearing, though it was the air escaping through the plug body.

I'd drive it as little as possible until you save up TBH. At this point you're probably doing more harm than good.

I wish it was that, he checked the plugs and said they were good. I haven't a clue tbh. I guess time will tell.warpc0il wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2019 4:49 pmWith those results I'd be wondering if the rear stationary bearing has failed and the tail of the eccentric shaft is wobbling around, either that or there's a big score in one of rear iron surfaces.

Keep an eye out and if you get lucky a cheap engine that runs may come up. I was luck (with help from here) and bagged one for 300. Run that while saving to get yours rebuilt.New Duke wrote:Please shop around before agreeing to have him do your rebuild. I hope 'clean most of it up and replace the seals' weren't his words. Mine was found on the rx8 classifieds UK Facebook page. It came out of a running car for an engine swap. He did have a second engine for the same price.Jeags wrote:Nice idea. Swapping isn't massively hard if you have everything. Namely a crane (you can rent one). I did mine 95% on my own (the Mrs helped with crane control while I lined everything up). Took me 4 days to get out and in. That's on my driveway with 2 stands and a lot of faffing. My knowledge of this was online guides, changing brake pads and discs experience and a butt load of enthusiasm.
I think in a proper garage I could do it in 2 days maybe 1 long day (18hours). I'd expect a pro could do it in less still.
I'll egg on everyone in to do it themselves as I found it very rewarding. But it could give you a rough idea of getting an experts cost £x X 18 hours = £etc
If there's enough work near by Luke maybe willing to travel up.

Great advice.
Don't destroy what may be a fairly good set of engine parts now.
Get a cheap temporary replacement to ride around with whilst saving up.

Re: And the compression results are in...
So just to be clear, you're suggesting I could find an engine that runs, swap it out for my poorly one and get that poorly one rebuilt and then swap it back in? If so, it's definitely a possibility, I guess i'd sell the engine I bought to run around after my old one was fixed?

Re: And the compression results are in...
Well it's up to you. I've kept my dead one as a project to rebuild. If the replacement one is good you can just run that and sell the old one for parts.Jeags wrote:So just to be clear, you're suggesting I could find an engine that runs, swap it out for my poorly one and get that poorly one rebuilt and then swap it back in? Hi there,i ,along with john, have had good luck with buying engines. as said before, contact big pete and see if he can help. in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with having a reserve engine, especially if you are keeping the car for a while. also ,i have a ramp here that you are welcome to use,and not that far from you,see my other thread about ramp meet, rob.

10/10 recommend Robs ramp. Robs ace too! Pete's a great guy with a large selection of parts and put up with my nonsense. 10/10 would order again.goodeggbob wrote:Hi there,i ,along with john, have had good luck with buying engines. as said before, contact big pete and see if he can help. in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with having a reserve engine, especially if you are keeping the car for a while. also ,i have a ramp here that you are welcome to use,and not that far from you,see my other thread about ramp meet, rob.
