It’s funny both you and Ranjan say the same about the Range Rover . I know the discovery has the same chassis as the Range Rover sport . Yet I find my van a much smoother and stable tow vehicle than my discovery is . Just my opinion ......

Talking of Land Rover, my choice would be a Forward Control. I've wanted one for so long, if I have to buy a trailer to justify it then so be it :D

Wayne,

The proper Range Rover is brill, not the Sport which is rubbish (my own opinion).

My cheap Shogun Sport/ Challenger has just well been epic..with a 3lv6 engine over the diesel its been much more reliable over the 100k mark...its down 133000 miles and purrs...ok its got a drinking habit but it tows immensely...just did a 424 mile round trip to ipswich towing to pick up a car used £80 in fuel...its 170bhp and with the gearing tows an rx7fd easy peasy. Its was £1500 pound 4 years ago....still worth £1500 and with the rear seats permantely down been a tip van too. With switchable 2wd/4wd saves on fuel but in Snow in 4wd go anywhere within reason.
Not towing with the V6 it shifts too with a lovely v6 snarl...but corners are hairy....
In my ownership needed an exhaust and caliper cheaply sourced from 4x4 specialistsImageImage

This thread has riled up my frustration with another reminder of what older drivers are rewarded with, despite the low standard of historic driving tests. Not to mention the lack of a compulsory theory test back then.
Haydn,

Ahh the misconceptions of youth, let this oldie educate you on the reality of the situation.
We oldies learned to drive on cars, real cars; you know three pedals, a gear stick, and a steering wheel; and if you had paid extra seatbelts and wing mirrors.
NO driver aids whatsoever but brains and skill and a steep learning curve which we all conquered to differing levels of competence, but we all developed some.
I now have a car which came with, and I kid you not….

Forward Collision Warning
Active Collision Avoidance
Autonomous Emergency Braking
ABS
DSC
Cross Traffic Alert
Active Cruise Control
Blind Spot Monitoring
Lane Departure Warning
Self-Parking system
Let alone the Tesla which drives itself to my office from home.

There is a huge debate that is considering whether this is creating a generation of skill deficient drivers and when I do any instructing of younger drivers I really have to start at the basics because their skills levels are diabolical. The biggest problem I have found is throttle application; younger drivers are so used to DSC that this really is a lost art.

So, I know who I would rather be a passenger with when the going gets difficult.

Ranjan.
p.s., get a Range Rover, best tow car of all time.
Best tow car Kia Sorrento. Not many cars when a decent tow limit these days and I presume it will only get worse.

Now onto further thread derailment (please take my comments as sarcasm and a joke ImageImage)

Yeah you oldies had all the fun! Not only did you get to drive real cars you could get steaming drunk and use those extras such as wing mirrors to guide you along the hedges Image speed cameras? What are they... CCTV on every corner for us these days with dashcams at the ready to catch you overtaking an oldie in their Jag.

Now the youth have to listen to old people tell them how good it was and how much better they are whilst most of them are financially sound because they brought their house for £5000 and actually get a pension whilst we have to try and buy over inflated house for 150,000 plus. Not forgetting some oldies thought technologies was a good thing and everything should be tech'd up to the max to help the new generation of brain dead snowflakes Image so now we are left with IT for IT sake and most of the kick starters are well rich and couldn't give a hoot what they started.

It's all your fault you damn old people Image my Dad can't reverse a trailer for love nor money but he learnt to drive in a Capri which is basically a locomotive on wheels.

I am one of them oldies you refer too :!:

Am allowed to drive all sorts of vehicles and tow things without any further tests

Drove all the way back from Scotland yesterday with NO Front Brakes [Metal on Metal], but because I was taught to drive using the Engine and Gears to slow the car down, I rarely had to touch the brake pedal to slow the car down until I came to a stop =D> =D> =D> =D>

Younger drivers are taught to use the brakes to slow the car down a lot later, which is why you see more sudden braking on our UK roads, when in some cases there is literary no reason to use the brakes :!: :!:

Anyway this thread is supposed to be about Vehicles Towing Trailers :thumleft:

Tis funny you say this. There was a time when my focus had literally no brakes. Me driving using the gearbox etc to slow down as much as possible not an issue. (I'm 26) My mum who was taught in the 80s to drive... Didn't get how I was able to drive the car like that. I think just after I passed my test they made an effort to stop teaching about engine braking and that was only 5 or so years ago. :p

Er, I'm in Hampshire. Granted not a million miles away from Surrey.
Also, I'm of an age where I don't need a test.

As for budget. Well I think it's probably more GC than Shogun..

So in my case I may be able to use the wife’s X1 which has a brakes towing of 2000kg.So provided I pass my b&e and my trailer is 500kg I should be okay with this setup?

Personally, although it may be within spec, I'd want something more substantial than an X1 to tow an RX8 on a trailer.

What engine is in it and is it all wheel drive? Wouldn't think it would be a bad tow car I have seen plenty tow with the 3 series BMW without any issues. What's the RX-8 weigh anyway? You will want to aim for 85% of your max tow weight if your not that experienced but you can still go up to 2 tonne legally

X1 kerb weight looks to be between 1500-1700kg depending on model. Even if you have the heaviest model, an RX8 on a trailer big enough to carry it is going to be at least 1700kg (our track car on an Ifor Williams is just shy of 1800kg loaded, for example). As mentioned above you'd probably be fine, but I like to have something a bit more substantial to tow with :)

I'm looking at replacing the Renault Zoe within the next couple of years with an older model Great Wall Steed, as a tow truck and practical daily (I do a lot of DIY). Plan to start green laning with it too. They can tow 2500kg braked and are ridiculously cheap compared to other trucks and just as good (or just as crap depending on your view of pickups but I've sworn never to buy an SUV).

Late to the party here, but we use an 2006 A6 allroad. Much like the above mentioned 335d it drives the same regardless of whether it's towing or otherwise and delivers better MPG while than the 8 would by itself...

It has the benefit (for us at least) of having 4wd and air suspension so we can raise it and lower it when required as we use it for towing a horse trailer. It's also one of the only road cars[/i] rated for 2.5t towing capacity. Most cars are only rated to 1.5t or similar, everything else that can tow that kinda weight is usually an SUV which will suffer on fuel economy a bit more as they are often less aerodynamic.

Interesting thread. I'm kindof in the market for something like this, or a load carrier/van anyway - but trailer and tow car is a possibility too.

Thanks - I've started considering one of these seriously now. What are they like to drive? I ask because I hired a SWB 2017 transit the last couple of days to transport my tools and stuff - and whilst ok, vans aren't really that refined and aren't patch on my cars to drive on the road with their bouncing, noise etc. etc. I'd expect a range rover to be far more refined. What's the shogun like?

I was also considering a people carrier as they're able to take large sheet materials too.

Basically I've got a house to do up, a lot of material collection and tip runs to do, I'd rather not ruin my beemer etc. etc.

The above concerns are why I'd say the A6 allroad would be the best idea. They (unsurprisingly) drive exactly like a car, but benefit from 4WD and towing capabilities. They are also quite cheap these days. Our 2006 with 150k on the clock cost us £3k. No service history to speak of, but the 3.0 TDI is chain driven and fairly bullet proof. Ours has a minor oil leak but has been fine in every other way.
