Supplied keys

Post by thepadol »

How many keys should I expect? How many were originally supplied - as in master keys, valet, and fobs? the owner's manual doesn't make it explicit other than different functionality. A BMW I had was supplied with 2 master keys plust a 3rd limited function key. Thanks.

Usually two and a master/valet key, fill out your profile properly to include your location, it will then appear in the LHS column each time you post, it will be useful if you ever need help or be directed to a specialist :thumleft:

Depending on the year...

Two master keys (black) with separate remote fobs, and one valet key (grey).
or
Two master "flip style" keys with built in remote fob, and one valet key.

But finding a second hand one with all of them is like finding out what makes cinnamon toast crunch so tasty.

Why would the second key be missing? The most obvious that comes to mind is that the owner didn't care much and just doesn't remember where it is. If it pops up it should be given to the new owner. That's in a perfect world. In a not so perfect world, how can one trust that the second key is truly "lost"? Just as one gives the house keys to a new owner, they are likely to be completely replaced to avoid any potential problems. Guess that's a little more difficult and much more costly for a RX-8. At the very least not having a complete set of keys to turn over should be a significant factor in the selling price.

Yes it was one of the points I used to argue down the cost on mine.

I'm sure I only got one key ( flip with integrated fob ) and one valet key when I bought mine. The car was brand new....

Is the 2nd fob key on request or always given ?

I've got one four button switchblade style. I should probably sort myself at least one spare at some point but... money.

They're pretty easy to code and pair if you have a laptop and a copy of the nigel-named ForScan programme for Windows.

On a more serious note, the reprogramming via forscan is on the Yankee forum, over here

Has anyone here actually used that process to program a key to a UK car?
The reason I ask is that our keys and keyless entry system are different and not interchangeable with those used on the US cars.

I have used ForScan to code keys to my R3 - worked a treat.

I have spare keys from the breakers I've acquired over time and it really is simples :)
