The importance of a good ignition system

Hi Guys,
Posting nothing here that most of us don't already know but having an ignition system in tip top shape really makes such a difference to how the car feels.I had a failing 585 coil ( or coils ) recently which Ben replaced for me ( all four,thank you Ben ) and the difference in the car is marked.

Obvs when the coils weren't at their best the car wasn't running the way it should have been but the difference a brand new set of coils can make is huge.My old 585's had circa 65000 miles on them before the car started hesitating and bogging down a little bit which tbh surprised me as I was under the impression the 585's were the mutts nuts so to speak but then again anything can fail at any time and that's ok.I'm not bashing the coils btw far from it,they have been great on my car right up to the point that they weren't but as I said things go wrong and I don't have a problem with that.

Anyways back to my original point,the new 585's coupled with plugs that are only a few months old on my car have it running sweet as a nut.I can really feel the difference in the pick up and she's as smooth as silk.I guess by right I should have replaced the magnecor leads with new ones which thinking about it now I think I will.Just my observations about an ignition system that's 100pc banging Feel free to chime in...

I believe that the original RR D585 kits were basically standard off-the-shelf coils with bespoke mounts, loom adaptors and HT leads.
While these were well received, Ben had a lot more warranty returns than he'd originally anticipated, especially given the glowing reports of these coils from the US forum.

However, Ben stood by his warranty commitments and took the hit, while having frank and open discussions with his coil supplier.

I don't know if he changed his supplier or they changed their source but there were significant changes in the products included in later kits.

This seems to have resolved the issue but not product is 100% reliable and, especially with a supporting mini-map dwell adjustment, the duty cycle on these coils is right up there for cars that are driven hard.

hi mate, as i said in one of my posts,it is often difficult to detect a slow gradual decline in performance. you have ,as i did,only found out about it by fitting new coils. as i also said in my post,buy a cheap coil tester,4 quid ish, and check your plugs or a regular basis, only 10 mins work for a lifetime of peace of mind, i am very glad you caught yours in time.

You'd notice the hesitation instantly,in fact as owners of these cars we are super tuned in to any minute changes in the running of the car,call it a combination of rotary paranoia and a finely tuned sixth sense after years of ownership.

I have to say Ben was brilliant but then again having dealt with Ben over the years that doesn't surprise me,he really is a great guy and his customer service is brilliant.I was literally on the phone with him for ten seconds and he said he'd send me new coils ASAP no problem,top bloke

Have to say I had issues with 2 of my 585 coils and RR replaced no probs.
Good lads ,cant fault them.

Do leads actually 'wear out'

The twin devils on my shoulders are in conflict over the RRP system - one is saying 'go for it' The other is saying 'your R3 only covers 1500-1700 miles a year,there's nothing wrong with the current D585's,and you royally pi$$ed of Ryan anyway..'

Any piece of wiring that has an electrical current flowing through it will eventually fail at some point. So leads can be "worn out" so to speak. Good leads will take a lottttttttt longer to die than cheaper leads. So its more of a matter of "how long do they last" vs "can it happen"

The OEM leads just die, though the effects of heat, water and corrosion.

Yeah, the stock leads are crap, the insulation gets compromised really fast with heat/ozone, etc, and then it arcs up the sheathing to earth instead of the plug, I don't think I ever managed more than a single weekend on stock leads before they were arcing up the insulation.

As above it's also the connectors at each end. The stock wires don't always seal very well, so they are far more susceptible to water ingress - which we all know is the enemy of most metals.

With respect to the 'D585 or D585-Rs' question above, not a great deal in realistic terms. I'd go for the RRP coils, personally (and I did).

My D585 kit died earlier this year. Had only done 20k.
Unfortunately i didn't purchase the coils direct so couldn't claim.
ended up buying mazda rev c coils and haven't looked back.

Have a look on Ebay.COM and you'll find the D585 coils dirt cheap.

The dirt cheap D585s on ebay sell @ $2/unit wholesale, from China.

These are just as bad as the cheap fake Mazda coils.
