Re: tick over trouble.
well,a lesson learned this morning. as i said i would,i have stripped the plugs, coils and leads out, and, although i said the car was running sweetly,my trusty 4 quid spark tester said no. after doing lots of elimination,i found that not only was T2 coil knackered, but L1 ,although sparking, was certainly not at its best. luckily,i had a set of RR585 coils as spares and put them on ,testing each one with tester. the difference in start up time is incredible, having gone from a few cranks to instant, whether hot or cold. i have yet to drive it,but i am expecting to see a noticeable difference.
this is a simple test that i would definetly recommend doing, for the sake of 4 quid, and i thank all the contributors above for making me aware of just how easy it is to do,thanks, rob. now for a spin.

Re: tick over trouble.
so, i have been for a spin,it is so much better. this is kuro 1 by the way. hind sight is a wonderful thing,as i remember commenting to my mate on our way to the shropshire meet, that kuro 2 was ,in my opinion ,just that bit quicker, but thought nothing of it at the time. it is nice to have two cars to be able to compare one to the other.
i would suggest to people with no comparison,to do this cheap simple test from time to time,as a very gradual decline in efficiency would almost slip by possibly unnoticed,as it would have with me with nothing to compare it with.
for those of you who are familiar with this simple test, this is not meant as an i know better, this is aimed at novices such as myself in order to help them avoid future issues .thanks,rob.

Dude I'm glad you got to the bottom of it! Which leads me to my own thoughts. Must get that tester. Great outcome man

Re: tick over trouble.
D585s judging from the first post.
But apparently, so I'm told, that a "trusted garage" doesn't think that those testers are effective on D585s.
But what would I / we know...

Re: tick over trouble.
The PCM only fires the trailing coils on the initial start-up, until the engine is spinning with enough momentum that it can't kick back.
This can confuse fault finding with plug testers, as it would seem to show an intermittent fault.

Re: tick over trouble.
nothing stopping you plugging all 4 testers at once and (shock horror danger) starting the car. wouldnt drive it like that but running it at idle to see if you have consistent spark.....

Re: tick over trouble.
Nope.
It only fires the leading coils for the first few revolutions.

Re: tick over trouble.
well, i i don't know when or how many are supposed to fire at any given time or revs. what i do know is that my testing has resulted in 4 good healthy sparks, and my initial tickover trouble has disappeared, and then some.rob.

Re: tick over trouble.
in answer to your question James, qwakers, and maybe to help others, the 585 coils i removed are all black, and the only number i have is HK24074,i would be interested in what they are.

Re: tick over trouble.
Herko I think - though that doesn't necessarily narrow them down to one supplier.
Also Dave, since the leading coil fires first, this wouldn't have anything to do with kickback.
And even if it did, surely you'd just retard the Leading coil's ignition timing so that cylinder pressures reach their peak ATDC.

Re: tick over trouble.
Not the best but when they work, they do seem to work.
I've got a set with one dead coil, so I keep the other 3 as spares.
