Testing the waters....

Post by kopite72 »

Hi Guys,
This is more of a tentative thread to see if there would be much interest in my car as opposed to being a full on FS advertisement but I may consider selling my car in a few months time or as soon as I can source what I'm looking for.

I'm in the market for a 25th Anni MX5 which are rare but if I can't get one of those i'll go for another edition like the Kuro or some such but it might be a while yet before I can get a good one.I'd like to keep both the R3 and the MX5 but to run and maintain both whilst doable is a financial drain I'm not sure I want to live with.Don't get me wrong I love my R3 and the rotary and hate the thought of getting rid of it but I also want a life!!

Most members on here will have an idea of what my car is like,Full Mz Customs kit,Pettit/Milltek cat back and a few other bits and bobs but it's defo not without a few issues. The front end needs a re-spray and it's suffering from the 3rd gear " popping out " from time to time.TBH these two issues won't take a lot of money to put right and when done the car will be 100pc,especially after a front end re-spray.

I've spared no expense in maintaining the car and have a folder full of receipts to back this up.The car has been with Ben at RR on a couple of occasions for work inc a master reset service the last time I was over.As stated it's not a FS post but more to gauge interest ( if there is any ) in her.

When/If the time comes to sell i'll include more details about the car and if anyone has questions i'll answer them in detail.I'm not even sure what I should be asking for her bit the market is the market I guess and that will ultimately dictate the asking price.

Anyways that's where I'm at with her, like I said it will be awhile yet before I even consider selling her but any thought, comments or advice are most welcome ;) BTW if this post is not In the right place feel free to move it :D

You should get a lot more in Southern Ireland than what the UK prices are on R3's Ian :thumleft:

Not a chance Nige, the market here for 8's is almost non existant.I could advertise it here when the time comes and I may sell it but I wont be holding my breath.

Funny thing is the market for 7's is better than the market for 8's over here.

Not really interested in the ND NIge,for me the 25th Anni is the best and best looking 5 Mazda produced, its just beautiful.I love that they are so rare,1099 produced worldwide, who wouldn't want to own a piece of that?!! 8)

Hi Ian, I know where your coming from when you say financial drain as that was my concern when wanting to get into the rotary world a second time.

I think I found a great compromise in having a nice cheap run around and taking out a mint RX8 for the summer. At the minute its like new, a part from a few tiny bit of rust in the under body but I will have the whole winter to sort that out myself. But the beauty of having it as a summer car it will only cost a fraction of what it could cost to run over the year. You get to work on it on your own time and pace when its in hibernation, And would you believe its a more special Feeling to get her out on the road when the summer comes round :thumleft: .
I could not recommend this enough because its simply awesome and Knowing how much you love your car Ian you will simply regret it big time if you sell it mate :)

My message is go summer car route all the way :thumright:

It's not as easy for me as that Aido,I'll.be spending the guts of 20K on a 5 when everything is factored in so to have that expense plus the expense of the 8 is not really financially viable.

You say hibernation but I simply can't do that. I don't have a garage so to put it in to storage is another expense on top of insurance and tax and so on.

The right thing to do is sell her on if I can and just have the 5 as my daily. I don't have kids and I'm not married so it's not like I need a big car. I'll have to think long and hard and make a decision accordingly but I know which way I'm leaning

I understand that owning both just isn't viable, it wouldn't be for me either, and if your heart's set on the 25th, then it sounds like you've made up your mind. You'll be back in a rotary someday though Ian.. :thumright:

I know Dave, I'll be giving the govt here the guts of 3.5K just to bring her in from the UK.

Believe me I hate handing over money to them just so I can buy a 5 but that's the way it is here and it's not going to change anytime soon.

It's never a fun prospect, but needs must and all that.

I know some guys in France who would take it off your hands, but it'll probably be about a grand less than you'll want for it. It would be a quick sale, though.

So you’re doing what I did and switching the R3 for an MX5!!
I regret having to let my R3 go as I loved it, however, I now realise just how much of a money pit it was!
The MX5 is cheaper to tax, insure and run. It uses little oil and gets 30mpg easy. I reckon on basic costs alone I’m at least £150 a month better off.
I also drive around now without having to constantly check what different warning lights popping on and off mean.
I miss the R3 but less each day.

I must admit, know longer miss checking the Oil or worrying about Flooding the car by just moving the car slightly from one space to the other =D>

The MX-5 Kuro Special Edition was also very nice with a reasonable spec 8)

Thanks for that Dan, tbh I'm not in a rush to get rid of it just yet but defo sometime this year.

@Metelyk ( sorry I don't know your name) would you believe the tax for a 5 is more expensive than an 8 over here  750 euros vs 636 for the 8.

I don't want to get rid of the 8 but as Dan says it's a case of needs must really. It's financial madness to keep and run both. If I did that it would cost me circa 3K PA to insure and tax both before either of them drove a mile.

My concern is selling it. As I said I don't think I'll shift it here and a potential UK buyer might be put off that it's in a different country, who knows? At the same time I don't want to give it away either. She's a great car and has never let me down, even the rebuild I had done 4 years ago wasn't the cars fault so like I said the car has been fantastic before and after the rebuild.

Things I won't miss are the horrendous fuel costs. I drove to Dublin last week which is a 160 mile trip and chucked in almost 120 quid  OK I had a bit in the tank by the time I got home but still, its actually laughable. I'm also not going to miss tyre costs, almost a grand a time but in fairness everything else is not too bad

I'll put it up FS when the time comes and see what bites I get

Post by GreySilver Beast »

Metelyk aka Andy

You will easily slash running costs by switching to the MX-5 Ian as tyres alone will be cheaper as they will mainly be 17's unless you buy a Sport Spec then it will be 18's :P

MPG will be double on the MX-5 so you will travel further on a tank of fuel than in the R3 =D>

You're a wise man Major Dyson !!!.The only thing i'll be thinking about if I'm standing at the top of Tomba is Jesus I hope I packed enough jocks

If I manage to get a 25th Anni Mark I won't be doing anything to it except driving and enjoying it.Regular servicing and oil changes, job done.

The problem with the 8's ( well its not really a problem ) is that they are very mod-able and once you start you tend to continue to the detriment of your bank account.I don't plan on doing that with my next car so i'll just go skiing instead or whatever :D
