Newbie from Chepstow

Post by firium »

Hi all,

I've been saving up for a little while now to buy a car for occasional track use and the odd tour. I love an interesting vehicle so the RX8 has been at the top of my list of options! I've been lurking here for a little while and read through the buyers guides so hopefully I'm fairly clued up on what to look for and the cost of ownership etc.

Going by what I've read, I understand that it's recommended to get a rotary specific compression test before buying? The nearest place I can find to get a test is Rotary Motion, I was wondering if there was anywhere closer to Bristol/South Wales area have the check done, or whether the trip over to Wiltshire was my best bet?

Otherwise, I just wanted to say a big thank you, this forum has been a tremendously useful resource in learning about RX8s and their quirks! If I do settle on an RX8 to buy I'll definitely be joining the club :)

Cheers,

Kieran

Hi and :welcome: firium. :D Well done on doing the research and finding the Buyers Guide. =D>

Try a PM to DanBass (click here) - he does compression tests. He is based in Rogerstone, Gwent - this is part of something posted on his behalf in one of the the members' areas of the forum
wrote:"I am pleased to be able to offer a compression testing service for South Wales and the South West.

I am located in Rogerstone, just off J28 of the M4, and am also happy to travel reasonable distance to offer advice and assistance, for example on a potential buy. The test takes 30 mins to an hour, please factor this in to any arrangements!"
It was posted in 2014 so I haven't included the quoted price (which was very reasonable) as it may have changed in that time. He also said if he comes to you there would be "additional charge to cover petrol and any reasonable expenses such as parking, to be agreed at booking."

Hi Kieran, welcome to the forum,
A few members have compression testers now so I would say start a thread asking if anyone is in your area.
Good luck with your search.
Regards
Pete

Thank you for the responses and friendly welcome :D

I'll chuck a DM to DanBass on the subject of compression testing. In terms of a thread, I'm guessing that the RX8 discussion section is the best bet?

Welcome to the forum firium, I wish you well in your quest for an RX-8.

Yep, start a new topic/thread in the RX-8 Discussion area to see who might be able to help, as well as dropping Dan a PM.

Welcome along firium, there are a few of us in the SWales area, and even more not too far away. Especially from Chepstow!

You could also try Phil Bate, he's even closer to you and is a Spin Doctor no less.. ;)

I think I saw a picture on Facebook of Phil snowboarding a few days ago, I'd guess he's not back yet.

Glad to hear I won't be alone! There's so many good roads round here, it seems like a crime not have a fun car to use on them ;)

Thanks for the tip, I'll send a PM Phil's way too.

Cheers :D
