How to use cataclean?

Post by plas87 »

How much fuel should I have in my tank to pour the whole 500ml bottle of cataclean? Is it okay to add some pre-mix 2T oil in too as the same time?

About a quarter tank spirited driving and then empty the tank prior to filling again :thumleft:

Does Cataclean have any tangible benefits? Is it recommended on this forum or a snake oil?

the bottle says put it all in to about a quarter tank and run at least 15 miles to be effective.

I used Cataclean when I first got my car, back in 2008, and it made a huge difference to how responsive the car was.
When I repeated 6 months later there was a perceptible difference, but nothing like the first time.
Repeated treatment, about a year later, really just in case for the MOT, and I couldn't tell any difference at all.
Same the following year, so I haven't bothered since.

My assumptions are;
- the car had been driven very gently before I took it over, having been owned by my parents for the previous 2.5 years, so there was probably a fair bit of carbon build-up internally.
- the last invoice for servicing in 2007 included a £240 charge for new spark plugs, though they clearly hadn't been changed since the car was built, given the state they were in in 2008. I fitted new plugs just after the first Cataclean treatment, which also made a noticeable difference.
- the car has been driven "as designed" all the time I've owned her, and been treated to premix, and for the last 8 years she's also had a sohn - all this means that there's very little opportunity for new carbon to get a hold.

I've used it on many cars

its hard to believe but it really does work and the dose is meant to be a full bottle in a 50ltr tank so bung the lot in

Had good results with CataClean

My method for use:-
Add cataclean when petrol light comes on and fill up with about a 5-10 quids worth of petrol
Drive like you stole it until petrol light comes back on
Add petrol and return to normal

As above, follow the instructions on the bottle :thumleft:
Cataclean is a very good product for carbon removal on a Rotary and has been used for many years.
I would always run a bottle through after getting an 8 even if it was decated.

Just echoing above really, most members on here with sing the praises of cataclean for the RX8.

Bung it in at a 1/4 tank and go have some fun until you've nearly run out of petrol. Then put petrol in and live the dream.

If you've already got the petrol in the tank it will have been pre-mixed (if you premix of course) so I wouldn't worry

Cheers Dave, spotted it on Amazon for about 14 euros delivered which is a good price,I'll pick up a few bottles soon.

Seeing as I've never used it in my car can I expect a good result? By that I mean a noticeable difference?

Quick question, seeing as my cat is gutted I'm assuming this won't have any bearing on cataclean being able to do it's thang?

Make sure you use the fuel with the cataclean in it fairly quickly too, you don't want it sat around in the fuel system for too long, it's extremely aggressive solvents.

So it's fine to add in around 50ml 2T premix oil along with the entire bottle of Cataclean in the quarter 15 litre fuel?

Just use the cataclean
It's not a lot of fuel to run through the car it will survive without any 2T
Get the car warm first, add the cataclean and show her the beep
