47.5k and going in this weekend to have a rebuild, high 3’s/low 4’s on the rear rotor. So far starts ok when hot and only struggled twice but my starter was cranking at 350rpm on the comp test 😁

91k miles PZ. All the signs of low compression, not bothered to compression test it but it's off the road for the moment. Will be booking in with RRP for a rebuild next year after some saving :)

Had to do that a few months back too. no fun having a rebuild at that mileage. Is your car back on the road again now?

Mines on 89k currently.

Not input the date to the survey yet as need to confirm the engine number is original or not.
I know the last owner had it since 2008 and had I think 40k on it back then. And I know he has not experienced an engine change.
I also found it has the original sluggish starter motor on it.
Just upgraded that to a 14 tooth unit.
Only bought the car summer 2018.
Starts OK hot or Cold but I think a hint of wear present and expected at 89k. Never fails though.

Incidentally if anyone has possibly owned or has any past details on this car - it would be great to know - here's the Reg: WR04MDE.
A long shot I know but any info would be greatly appreciated. 👍🙂
231, upgraded starter motor, Toyo Sport cat back exhaust, stock cat, stock engine. Running 10/40 oil and now premix with Castrol Power 1 Racing 2T fully synthetic two stroke oil. Long term gains or improvements to be monitored.

I've replaced the engine in my RX8. Original developed hot start issues at around 58K miles. Sold on this engine. Fitted a replacement which I picked up of Facebook, (thanks 13Black). Its an LC Rotary rebuild with about 8k miles on clock since the rebuild.

Heya guys, I know that once you get into mid / high 5s you should be looking for a rebuild. I recently got some very disappointing compression results, however, the car has no symptom of anything. The fuel economy is about the same, starts first time even in appocalyps time, is it possible to get to the rebuild stage with a relatively healthy ''aspect''?

from what i gather yes. you can be running fine before it detonates / wont start.

5.5 does not mean a rebuild though, just budget for one. @warpcoil ?

Re: Engine Survey

The compression figures aren't finite, however running an engine with low compression can result in full-on failure which would make parts of the engine scrap and potentially lead to higher costs at rebuild time.

5.5 isn't horrific, but it isn't great either. If it is running OK at the moment I'd probably keep an eye on it and get it tested again in ~6 months to see if it's getting worse, all the while saving for the eventuality.

I'm with Dan on this, especially if there's any reason to suspect that car has not been used as intended by the previous owner.

Pottering around in high gears at low revs can cause a build-up of carbon that makes the seals stick and reduces the compression test results, sometimes with little noticeable impact on performance - unless you've just jumped out of another 8.

It often enough just to check that everything else is as it should be, particularly the ignition system and engine oil, and give the car a good opportunity to stretch its legs on a journey.

This doesn't mean speeding everywhere, just holding in lower gears and letting the engine rev.

Alternatively, a treatment with Cataclean first may give quicker results, though you still have to drive the engine hard to make this work.

Be prepared for some beeps from the dashboard and some squeals from the passenger seat

Missed this and realise it was back in October! whoop!

Car is running again. It's worth noting, for the purposes of this thread at least, that my engine failed due to a snapped intake vacuum hose and not due to wear and tear or anything like that.

Re-voted. Went for a rebuild in the end at 81K. One of my rotors was in the low 4s so despite no starting problems I thought it best not leave it too much longer. Plus I really wanted a streetport as well.... :)
