This might make you feel faint

Post by BigWang »

As someone who's just passed their test, I'm aware my insurance will be unfairly high in price.

However ontop of this, I happen to live in a big city, that I understand doesn't have the greatest crime rate.

Lowest insurance quote for an RX8 is £3,500...

I know I know... "get a cheap crap car for a year till it goes down".

Well, a 67hp Ford fiesta will still set me back £2,500 a year, if I'm gnna have to sell a kidney for insurance either way.. May as well go for the rwd monster anyway right?

After a year of NCB it drops by around 900, so it doesn't get much prettier.

If it weren't for the essential "rebuild fund" I would just suck it up. But it feels like insurance simply want to keep me out of a car :(

Yeh its a Pi55er for sure, but it is the same for all young or new drivers.
My son had to pay £1600 for a diesel focus with a black box on..!
£1450 the second year and still wanted £1100 the third year.

Hes now bought a Polo GTI+ and its over £2500 to insure.

I was quoted over £600 for my RX8 with full no claims and im 49...! All because my no claims discount was used to insure another car of mine.
Cheeky ferkers..!

No way round it im afraid. Bite the bullet or be sad..!

do u have a partner or possibly a parent that could insure the car and put u as main driver sure they would likely bring it down somewhat.

Hey,
I gave that a go after a friend suggested it, but oddly it didn't budge, despite her 5 year ncb. I think it's because she only has an automatic license..

Try adding your mother, assuming she has a licence of course!! Also its not the value of the car but the cost of the damage statistically caused by young people and sports cars.

Surprisingly Alan, FC quotes can sometimes be cheaper as people who insure FC are usually more careful - weirdly.

I think insurance prices are despicable these days, I had a 1.8 petrol Golf when I passed my test which cost me £800 a year to insure, on my own policy. I've never paid more than £1000 for an insurance policy, even when I had an accident, no NCB and 6 points on my licence...

Car insurance seems to be like car tax - they can't increase the premiums of the drivers already out and about, but they can make it ridiculously expensive for those drivers who are just starting out - who usually have the least cash out of all of them!

Feel your pain BangWang (love that name btw)

I had similar quotes when I passed (even 17 years ago they wanted over £2k) and because of family circumstances no parent's insurance to go on.

So I waited 5 years to drive again, until the quotes finally reached just over £1k for a crappy hatchback when I hit 23. All those years of waiting to have my own car made me really appreciate every car I've owned since and respect my license. Not had a point on it... yet. Now at 35 my R3 insurance is only £200 a year, even with work use on film sets (film is one of those blacklisted industries for insurers). So it will get better.

At least in a big city you should have good public transport and could save a lot of money not getting a car yet. Could be worth considering anyway.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit! Yeah, insurers hell of a don't want you in that car!
But you're right, insurance for teens is ridiculous for any car at your age, My 20 year old nephew is paying £1600 for a 1.4 Polo with a black box, it's obscene. But if you can afford it....
Personally I'd give it a few years, until you've had an accident or two. You might not, and I hope you don't of course, but a lot of younger people get that extra bit of education that writing off a car gives you.

That's a great price for 35. EDIT - On second thoughts, no need to broadcast that info with my number plate in the pic!!
Is it possible to get insurance less than £200 these days? I insured myself on aforementioned Polo and ended up paying about a tenner less than for my Rx8.

I dropped a grand to insure both of my cars over the last 2 months, £400 for the Jaaaaag and £630 for the RX-8. Although the agreed valuation and included track days will account for the size of the RX-8's policy, and the prang I had 4 years ago that wasn't my fault but still has to be declared has been hammering me since it happened. It's a pain in the arse to be honest, especially considering I'm 32, do 20k miles per year for business, and have a completely clean licence. But insurance is a legal requirement, so needs must I guess.

And even the worst policies I've ever had were a pittance in comparison to yours BigWang. Worst I've ever had was £1000 for the first year of owning and driving my Mk2 Golf, so I feel for you. Not a nice place to be starting your driving career, that's for sure.
To Do List: HKS CAMP2 install; cruise control; new exhaust; detail paintwork, possible respray

Done: Hayward Rotary rebuild and stage 2 port; Racing Beat ARBs, adjustable front droplinks, ram air intake and lightened flywheel; Exedy stage 1 clutch; Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs; Koyo radiator; heated front screen; EBC redstuff pads all round

Try EInsure multicar. They apply the same no-claims to all the cars you insure with them and then give you 10% off too ;)

The whole black box concept is just depressing, saw a sticker on the back of a car the other day apologizing for having one!
When I was young I was paying stupid amounts for crap cars, think it's a right of passage.

One thing to look for now early RX8's are reaching 15 years is classic car insurance.

Had a 1.4 Rover 200 which cost a lot to insure, swapped to an old Saab 9000 turbo and the insurance premium was a third even though it had over double the horsepower.

I wouldn't have a black box policy; I'd rather walk.

The cousin of a er... lady friend... of mine got a black box insurance policy. After about 5 weeks they wrote to him, cancelling his policy because they said the data showed his driving wasn't up to scratch. He probably was driving like a bell end, seems that sort of kid, but you really don't need that on your insurance record; it's declarable for life!

No way you should be driving a rwd 200hp car as a first car having just passed your test. Recipe for disaster.
New drivers should be limited to 100hp for 3 years.
I speak from experience - I crashed my dads Cavalier Sri (1800) just 5 weeks after passing as a 17 yr old. I didn't have a clue - clearly thought I did mind.

Get thee to the 1.0 (non turbo) fwd department sharpish and stay there for 3 years!
That way when you 'graduate' you'll appreciate better cars more.

I didn't insure myself on a car until I was 25 or so, so I never saw the kind of punishment that's being laid down to new drivers now.

Be like me! Study for a PhD and then your insurance is quite reasonable when you can finally afford a car of your own. It delays most things by about a decade being honest...

I'm a boring old fart, living out in the sticks, with my car locked in a secure garage.
I don't commute or even use the 8 as a daily any more.

This was the cheapest quote I received from CompareNI.com a couple of years ago
|
insurance quote.png
|
After which I renewed with my current broker for less than 400 quid, all mods declared.

My Mother got a reasonable offer via CompareNI for her Fiesta
It took 6 months for her "free dashcam" to arrive and it was like something out of a Christmas cracker.
The battery holds it's charge for about 30 seconds and the picture quality is sh*t
