I'll give them a call and see what we can do.... It's one of my locals so I'd prefer to have them on board with any plans.

I hope to be there but the schedule at work doesn't stretch that far ahead yet. What are the odds on me being on the late shift?

Gary I was text speaking to Carl who is the Chef at the pub and he said for large groups above 6 people, it would be best if we were in the Marque outside in the garden :thumleft:

Can you tow charge a Tesla, like you can with a Rivian?
https://rivian.com

In the series "Long Way Up" they had a couple of pre-production Rivians supporting the prototype Harley Davison e-bikes, and often had to tow them behind IC trucks/vans when there was nowhere to plug in.

You can! And in fact, if you have an inefficient enough tow truck, it's actually more efficient to tow the Tesla to charge it for a while and then drive the Tesla the rest of the way, than it would be to do the entire journey with the truck alone :P

(And surprisingly, no, that doesn't break the laws of physics! See explanation towards the end of this video:) ;)

That’s a great play on numbers which cannot actually be correct. The simplest play on numbers I know is counting to 11 on your hands without counting any digit twice. Count down from 10 to 6 on one hand, then add 5 for the fingers on your other hand, result 11!

Nope, it is correct. Not a play on numbers! Watch the video. It's very well explained. And the maths checks out ;)

No laws of thermodynamics are being violated, it's just that the unladen truck is so inefficient at turning fuel into motion that it's actually more efficient to charge the Tesla, with all the losses that entails, and then have the Tesla convert that energy back from electricity to motion again, than to let the truck do it. The inefficiency of the truck vastly outweighs the losses of converting the energy 3 times, because the truck is producing *way* more torque than it actually needs to propel itself along (it is designed to be able to tow things / pull heavy loads, after all!). Most of that energy would normally just be wasted as heat, but in this case the Tesla is using it to charge, effectively, and then converts more of it back to motion than the truck could have in the first place.

Its the equivalent of using the engine in the truck to drive a generator which charges a battery, then using that battery to drive an electric motor. The engine + generator + electric motor combination is more efficient overall than the engine is alone via direct drive, because the engine is vastly over-spec'd for the purpose, so even with conversion losses the net efficiency via electric is higher. The generator can extract more useful energy from the engine than can be gained just moving the truck :)

In fact, some hybrid electric cars / trains use this approach, exactly because it is more efficient! Engine->generator->motor often beats the engine directly driving the wheels mechanically, somewhat counter-intuitively!

While this is waaaay off topic, most of the efficiency gains associated with "Engine->generator->motor" installations is about running the engine at constant speed and load, for which it is much easier to tune for efficiency that direct drive, even via viable transmission, requires.

Getting very slightly back on topic, this is also where the rotary range extenders really shine, since they're low vibration, and high specific output (power:weight) and amazingly efficient at constant speed/load.

Well, it was a small gathering, with 6 of us present, but soooo good to get out to a pub meet again for some lovely food, good company and a natter.

Great to meet Steve for the first time and see his Nordic Green RX-8 :thumleft:

We took a few minutes to remember and reminisce about Ray. It was strange to think he won't be joining us at these meets any more :(

Ian brought along KIMI 2 to give KIMI 3 some company in the car park  We had a pleasant convoy back from the pub to Colchester on the journey home too.
