Can I ask that as many "regulars" as possible (plus anyone new or not so regular, who will also be most welcome) attend this month's meet. I think we need an open debate on how we try to attract more club members in the future. I'm not at all adverse to trying a new venue/format/date if we think it will help. I think Ray would want a regular meet to happen, and if that is best achieved by evolving the venue/format/date then let's do it.

I seriously appreciate Red & Black's, Metelyk's ideas for us to debate. Any other ideas are welcome here - please post them up so we can consider them.

It's clear this meet has had a declining attendance for some time, well down from the days where we would regularly attract 8-12 attendees.

If any previous attendees are reading this, any views on how you might be attracted back would be very welcome to the debate.

For my own part, maybe we should consider trying something different once in a while to see what works. We also, as Red & Bkack eluded to, need to publicise the event more widely. Perhaps we can get a list of members in East Anglia and send out a PM or email to all of them. I'd bet many are unaware that the meet takes place.

Red & Black, I re-read comments and that is what lead to me making a proposal for a Christmas meet at a venue slightly more accessible and with a large car park. I accept your comments were made with the right intentions, and that you would not have known the history behind the event or the personal circumstances of the meet organiser. Harrizone and Essex meets do not need to be separate, but they are linked and I don’t see an issue with that.
I’ve also reached out to some who used to attend to try and encourage them to do so again. If everyone pulls in the same direction there is life in the meet.

Hi Derek,

I was not “taking a swipe” at you but simply trying to highlight the two different RX8OC Facebook presences which carry very similar names, one I think is a group and the other a page which have very different features.
I hope the attendance figures can be improved to ensure the survival of this historically significant meet.

I appreciate I am miles away from the meet and, in honesty, never likely to attend - but there are a growing number of 'Cars and Coffee' style venues across the country which are becomming more and more popular; these prove to be great venues for the kinds of meets that we host on a monthly basis.

Likewise the venues are all being held to account for attendees' behaviours, so the days of carpark limiter bashing are either gone or numbered. The likes of Caffeine and Machine will happily ban people for behaving in such a way.

I don't know the area, but wanted to make some suggestions with a view to keeping monthly meets going where we can - and this one is clearly a special one to the OG members.

EDITED to add this link: https://www.carcalendar.co.uk/venues/

It's a list of venues that are car orientated. Not been through the list to find anything over that way, but a good place to start :)

Likewise, with the younger membership base, changing working environment and so on perhaps a weekend lunch time may be better? Again, just my musings

There seems to be conflict of what is acceptable behaviour here. You say that the venue has the right to ban anyone for unreasonable behaviour, and so they should. Not so long ago, a friend of ours was issued with a life time ban for high lighting bad behaviour at what was a club run event, can you please explain?
Apologies to whoever controls this thread for using it for this purpose.

Not sure where you got that from, Rob.

My comment was that places like Caffeine and Machine, which is a business, banned someone from attending their venues because they nearly crashed head on in to oncoming traffic on a public road.

'A friend of ours' was banned for multiple reasons, none of which were for calling out bad behaviour at a club event.

There are mature owners with time and money in our area. I sometimes meet them on my drives. Whether they want to be associated with the club these days or can do a Friday night is a different conversation.

Malcolm's suggestion seems wise, as always. Particularly keeping the format discussion to the local attendees. I'll see if I can attend on the 27th, despite rarely being able to make Friday nights anymore. Most of my evenings are booked these days.

A 'lite lunch' format is one that I could more regularly attend. Followed by a short drive for those who fancy it would be lovely.
Ray had some great stories about the old Essex breakfast drives... not that I'd want to do those speeds or go out that early.

Ray was also the only other person to drive my car on track, and he overheated it! It was the cars fault of course ;) :race: . I hope I'll be half as missed as he is by friends when I'm gone.

Would it be possible to email a list to all members of all the regular monthly meets then we are not relying on Facebook, the Forum, WhatsApp and X etc; which only work if people are searching the correct parameters whereas am email with a catchy subject line will reach members who don’t frequent the forum or Facebook groups infrequently or even never.

Post by Red & Black »

Sorry Malcolm, after I said I would not be attending this months Meet, I made arrangements to visit our eldest daughter in Christchurch from the 27th for four days.

I've always wanted to join the RX8 Club, to get involved and meet others who share my passion and interest for the car since purchasing it in 2004. I did join in 2007/8, I think, but my business and family life gave me very little time to follow it through.
I retired just as the pandemic hit, now Covid has been swept under the carpet and I have the car looking great I just want to get out there and enjoy it. I've had a fantastic time this year attending three well organised Club Meets and enjoying the company and the cars of fellow club members. I see no reason why Regional Meets can not be organised in a similar way, okay the numbers will be reduced, but as my Facebook exercise has shown.... if RX8 owners are not taking the initiative, or even know that they exist, then why not reach out to them? Yours and Chris's idea of emailing members in the areas where Meets take place may also bear fruit!
My suggestion of splitting the Essex Meet was born on the back of Nigel's comment, 'we are reluctant to change it around now'! Personally it's not working for me, I would prefer daylight Meets, especially in the winter months and Dr FrankenRex has offered some interesting options that I would like to endorse going forward.

I can see you've been making contact with interested parties for the Essex Meet on my Facebook page. Please could you arrange for one of the committee members to follow up on others that have responded to the FB post? Sean Pearce has added a link to the Club Forum, but some might not be RX-8OC members and know that they can attend Area Meets.

Historically monthly meets have not fallen within the remit of the clubs EC but what appears to be a national campaign to create regional meets be they monthly or quarterly perhaps in these times of change the EC should pick up the coordination of the responses to Derek’s Facebook post.

Sorry to hear you will not be able to join us this month Derek. However, a sincere thank you for raising the issue of the dwindling attendance. I totally agree that we need to review the current date/venue/format and see if we can tweak things to encourage greater attendance.

It's also clear to me that we need to better publicise the existence of the monthly meets. The forum topic and (for me, and I suspect others) difficult to find Facebook notifications are just not working.

I also really appreciate EVERYONE's views in this topic so far. I know you are all wanting to help and so I appreciate the effort you have all taken to post in here - all suggestions are most welcome.

If it's any help, the Midlands meet can vouch for the validity of switching to daytime meets during the Winter months. There's always people who can't do that weekday evening time but can do the weekend daytime slot, and vica versa.

Personally I don't mind travelling at night to get back home but it takes some of the fun out of the drive if both legs must be at night, especially if it's a lengthy trip.

A weekend slot needn't replace Ray's original slot if you want to keep it going for old times sake. But as Dan has suggested, odds are Ray himself would have experimented with options so I don't think there's a need to take anything personally here :)

And lastly as we all know, it'll still be a bugger to get people to pull there fingers out and turn up, whenever and wherever it is :)

You are a tough lot chatting in the car park on a dark winter night!

Nice to meet up this evening. Had a good chat and a good laugh.
Got home in 1hr. Maybe future meetings should be later in the evening when the roads are quiet 😉

Not been in the Six Bells before.
Nice pub, reasonably large car park.
Great food, pleasant hosts.
Good meeting place. Defo worth using again.

Useful chat about alternatives for the meet last night too.
I’m sure you’ll all look forward to further announcements.
I see Nigel has already told you the date of the next meet.
Be there or be square 😉
