A-Plan have given me an even better quote than Chris Knott, so I've got some comparing and thinking to do. Thanks for the suggestions!

Mention bhp increases and a lot of them recoil in horror.
I did not have any look with the ones mentioned so far but got a reasonable price from Greenlight Modified car insurance.
My multicar policy with Admiral would not quote on my new car ,which then means my NCB is tied with them but luckily a lot of the Insurers will now mirror your NCB on a policy so you don't have to start from scratch on another car. Which is the way it should be to be honest, as ive earned the NCB ,not the particular car im driving so it should be the driver, not the car.
Anyway Greenlight are worth a try if your struggling.

I'm all good now, I've gone with Chris Knott. A-Plan seemed a bit old-fashioned in their ways of doing things. Chris Knott, beat their price too and sent all documents via e-mail and I was in contact with same lady each time. Every modification declared and listed by insurer.

Yes, thanks for the suggestion. Like I say they were very obliging, beat the cheapest quote I had elsewhere, and from what I can see, the cover is better for my mods with like for like replacement etc.

Flux just flip a coin if they are going to give you a decent quote or try and put you off. Either that or down to if the person on the phone doesn’t like the sound of you. Never had a good quote from them. Normally thousands above others. Same with family members of much greater age trying to insure the same car. They have a lack of consistency.

Well mine is Modified a little and they Insure me for around £350 a year with a with a right off value all they ask for is some pics of the car and my mods which is pretty comprehensive but 5 years with them now they know what i need ;)

Trying to please everyone is surely doomed to fail? No one can produce a perfect model for predicting insurance.
I struggle to imagine a day where insurance becomes significantly less like a lottery - particularly with underwriters where the quotes are not under their full control.
If one company can't help, shop around as usual.

I would think it should be fairly simple based on claims history.
No claims in 32 years equals fairly safe bet?
It would appear not.
I personally shop around myself but it really is a pain in the ar$e...!

I'd have thought so, but as HMRC can tell from how little tax I pay, I don't work in insurance, so I've no idea what funny tricks their algorithms play sometimes.

Insurance companies insuring me on some cars and not others, not being competitive one year and then they are the next, some companies not touching me with a barge pole and others being quite happy to take me on ... is that not what you've experienced in those 32 years? Looking down the list of quotes presented on comparison sites goes to show that the whole industry is a bit of a lottery, I just choose to get it sorted and get on with things worth worrying about. Spilled milk and all that.

Yep pretty much
30k 420 bhp car insured for less than £400
4k RX8 costs me £560, go figure...!
Even our Berlingo insurance is similar to 420 bhp car which is worth a fraction of the car .
I think they really do just make it up.
I hate Insurance companies
That may have become apparent...!
Its just so annoying having to shop around.
Where as I have a house insurance company who give me a great price every time and I have been with for 15 years or so, although I still don't send them a Xmas card.

Maybe RX-8 insurance quotes are bumped up from engines exploding and owners 'accidentally' setting the cars on fire and claiming £1,500 back for arson. Quids in! Not that I've ever done that twice in the past or anything.

I've got police proof that I can drive over the speed limit on multiple occasions and still not claim on insurance I'm that safe, and yet they still hold that against me, can't win.

It's just statistics nothing personal... I've worked for insurance companies in the past

They might have had lots of people with your job or live near you that had crashes etc but another company hasn't

Sorry, what?

Because you're not privvy to the statistics that they use, it's a lottery?

That's almost as bad as the statement from the OP earlier in the thread going ""not in the market" whatever that means, doesn't mean anything to me hence as good as not giving me a reason." - translation - I don't understand so it's like they didn't say anything.

No wonder the insurer doesn't want to deal with people who get their knickers in a twist because they don't understand the language used...

There may well be rhyme and reason to insurance quotes but I'm yet to find it
When Adam was old enough to drive we did some comprehensive research into suitable first cars (we did spreadsheets and everything!)
The price quoted varied from week to week
Some of the higher performance models were actually cheaper to insure than the more traditional "1st cars", for example the 1.8T & V5 beetles were cheaper to insure than a base 1.6 beetle. These were then all considerably cheaper than the corresponding model Golf that they are based on.
The lexus IS200 was more expensive to insure than the Toyota Altezza even tho they are essentially the same car.

When I moved back to the UK a few years back my Alfa 2.0 GTV was a third cheaper to insure than a Ford Ka

While it may not actually be a lottery, it certainly feels like one

It's statistics, an altezza is an enthusiasts car so let's likely to get smashed, you find a company you are happy to do business with and go with them.

Ultimately people are looking at it from a 'me and my car' perspective.

Insurance companies look at their overall portfolio and the risk it represents. If the overall risk, across ALL POLICIES (car, home etc.) ticks above a certain amount they will begin to charge much higher premiums for that period to drivers they deem to take their overall risk slightly higher - i.e. an 18 year old driving an RX8.

This will vary as new policies are added to their overall portfolio, or as old policies drop off - hence why it can vary day by day.

To sit there and say "I don't look at the bigger picture, so it must be that XXX insurer didn't like the sound of my voice" is stupid and naive. The world doesn't revolve around one single person, and insurance is comprised of overall risk of a company's portfolio - not just 'do 18 year olds crash RX8s very often?'

It's so much bigger than that, which is why it can appear that they are shafting certain demographics where others are not. Ultimately an insurance company is not about to publish their overall risk, which is precisely why comparison websites are the best way to establish which insurers deem you higher or lower than their overall portfolio of risk and whether they are 'in the market' (note the phrase that "meant nothing" to the OP) to add such a risk to their portfolio.

It's not a lottery, it just involves statistics that are not made public. Use a comparison website and be done with it. If you want to argue with someone on the phone, then crack on, but a national (or sometimes global) insurance company isn't about to put their company portfolio in to risk just because someone got sh*t with them on the phone.
