Forscan steering reset

Post by Calcifur83 »

Hi all,

I have searched and searched and I cannot find any of the posts that relate to resetting the steering with forscan to try and fix a steering wheel that is stiff to the right but loose to the left.

I know it's here somewhere but my searches are coming up blank. Could someone help point me to the right place ?

Thanks

Cant help with the forscan stuff I'm afraid but glad to read that I'm not the only one struggling to search and find specific things within the furums. Took me 10 mins to find the Bucks meet forum post last night, so thanks for the reassurance that I'm either not a numpty, or I'm not the only numpty on here.

Thanks guys, that video was really helpful. I managed to get connected to the cat and read the steering angle, but it doesn't let me change from read to control. I am guessing it's because of my Bluetooth adapter?

I didn't have the car jacked up to take the weight of the wheels so not going to read to much into the reading of -3.8. this was more of a dry run to see if it worked.

While doing this I noticed a DTC code C2778 on the ABS module, but there is no light on the dash. Could it be an old code, or is it a dead abs sensor? Googling the code was a bit vague.

steering angle sensor voltage out of range. could be historic from a bad battery connection or flat battery, or it could be corroded power connections to the rack.

Ok thanks. I'll have a look and see what I can find. I am now having issues with the FORscan app on my windows tablet. Not sure why it's suddenly decided it doesn't like my obd adapter. Need to invest in a usb one I think.

Yeah I have the extended license. I was able to program keys to the car a while back so I don't know what is going on. Could be my tablet is crap and is struggling with the software.

Re: Forscan steering reset

So I have been out and tried again a few times. I can get FORScan to select the 2x torque values in the read section. But it will not let me select control. If I click it in the drop down it just ignores it. I guess it's to do with the Bluetooth adapter, although it's the same one I used to reprogram the keys to the car.

If anyone has any ideas I would be interested in hearing them. Other wise I'll need to buy a proper usb cable.

What forscan version you running? Mine worked with 2.3.43. Also what does the log say about your ELM device? Usually in the third line of the log, I read a lot about it being fussy with certain adapters so your Bluetooth one could likely be the issue not playing ball.

If you want to buy a usb one anyway then they’re not expensive but I can send you a known working one for this procedure if you want it. I bought a second, slightly different one when I was first trying because I thought my adapter wasn’t working but it turned out my procedure was wrong so now I have two that work. I’ve tested it with both.

I'll need to have a other look tomorrow and see what the log is saying. I didn't notice any errors in the connection log. It detects the elm adapter, loads the vehicle profile and goes into a run through of the modules. All came up clean apparent from the DTC code I mentioned above.

So I checked the log this evening. Interestingly both my dad's RX8 and my Project Nemesis have the same fault code and the same stiff steering to the right.
Below is a copy of the log. But yet is still doesn't let me choose the control module. It is also touch about whether or not I get to change to EPS. So I am assuming it's the Bluetooth module as it's the same on both cars. And also the same with the FORscan app on my mobile.
I'll buy a proper cable at the weekend

So I managed to get it working. Turns out I just don't know how to use a Windows tablet correctly and wasn't selecting this properly! Anyway I managed to get the procedure to work on my project Nemesis, so now the steering just feels like an Allen key rounding out a cap head screw..Image. However when I do the exact same thing on the other Nemesis I get a failure to write the pid in the log. As per the attached image.

When I click 'ON' it errors but when I click 'OFF' it registers. So don't know whats going on. Will try again as it may have been my dodgy cable connection, but I doubt it. Is there any other reason this would happen? Image

Tested this again today and still no luck. I assume this means there is a physical issue with the steering rack rather than a software/calibration issue.? I do have a couple of racks I can try swapping over to see if it works.

It could be corrosion in the torque sensor.

Yeah weird that it won't let you "turn on" the calibration but will let you turn it off... I have a steering module spare should you get to that point.

Re: Forscan steering reset

Post by Calcifur83 »

Well, I finally have an update for this!!! I managed to get my hands on a proper cable and a salvaged laptop for work and tried resetting the steering of the old man's Nem again today. Sadly I was met with the same failure to update the PID as before. However I did discover that if I applied a small amount of force to the wheel to get the reading to be close to each other it would update, so after some trial and error, I finally managed to get some improvement in the steering. the reading was -3.5 and I managed to get the calibration to -2.5 and now the steering feels pretty well evenly weighted in both directions. I imagine that it is not 100% perfect but it is way better than it was!

What confuses me is that on my Project Nem it worked fine but on this one it doesn't. I assume it must be the rack is on its way out. either way, it's much nicer to drive now so I am calling this one a win, for now!..

Interesting discovery and even more interesting if we can work out what's going on here.

I still don't understand what causes the steering to lose calibration, whether it's just being without power for n months, or some out-of-scale input caused by a electrical or even mechanical fault; i.e. the torque sensor getting stuck.

Re: Forscan steering reset

Post by Calcifur83 »

Yeah it's very strange. Thinking back on it the details may hold some information.

When applying pressure to the wheel it would only update the reading of I was withing a few nm of the currently set value. For example the reading was -3.5 and the compensation reading was 0.0. So turning the wheel to get a reading of 0.5 allowed the value to update, then move it to 1.0 it would update further and so on all the way to 2.5. From here it would not go any further. The process was repeatable all the way back to 0.0 and then on to -2.5 where again it would not go any further, despite the required value being -3.5.

I noted that at maximum input the readings range from -9.5 nm- 9.5nm

Maybe the torque sensor on the steering rack is on its way out?

I have 2x other steering racks in the garage that I can play with when I finally get round to starting my £500 Nemesis project.
