Endplay changing from bearing replacement

Post by julian.rx8 »

Hello,

I'm currently in the process of replacing the front and rear stationary bearings of my beloved 13B, after I put it all together I was measuring endplay of the rotating assembly which was 0,19mm which is definitely too much. Now it doesn't really make sense to me how the endplay would change by replacing the bearings.
I had to measure the endplay with the engine being in a vertical position not in a upright-position because I couldn't torque down the e-shaft bolt with the engine being vertical (tightened the e-shaft bolt when it was vertical with an impact so the torington bearings wouldn't fall out, then turned it horizontal to torque the e-shaft bolt down). After it being torqued down I pulled and pushed on the flywheel for measuring endplay. I also did measure it on the e-shaft bolt and not the pulley (which would be the correct way according to the workshop-manual)

Does measuring the endplay vertically and on the bolt affect the endplay in any way? Or does a bearing replacement change the endplay?
Engine came brand new from Mazda in 2014 and was never opened before

regards
Julian

what can happen is the bearing 'plates' can fall off centre if the nut is done up with the shaft beinng horizontal

so I suspect you'll need to have the front cover off to check this all as it should be

Yes, i did have the front cover off to measure the endplay

I'm guessing by bearing "plates" you mean the Torrington/needle bearings, right?
I did tighten the bolt to around 200nm in the vertical position so I'm fairly certain that these wouldn't fall down before turning it to the horizontal position to fully torque it down to the 300nm that are needed for measuring endplay

If I'm reading your end play correctly at 0.019mm that is less than 1 thousands of an inch and I believe it should be more like 3 thousands plus, or am I wrong?

Oups, it's 0,19mm not 0,019mm
I did edit it in my first post to avoid confusion

Mazdas spec for the endplay is between 0,04mm and 0,09mm

If the bearings had moved then the shaft would be jamming, not showing a greater clearance. Only thing to do is take it all off, check and start again.

I will do that in the coming days
If it's still the same I'll order a "C" endplay-spacer for it, currently there is a "D" in there

I have a couple of C spacers here and can post one to you if buying one is expensive or they are not available quickly.

Hey Chris,
I'm not exactly sure if I can get a hold of one if I would be needing one yet. I'll definitely come back to you if there are none available. Thank you very much

Update on that story:
I got myself a "C" spacer, put it in there and the endplay didn't change by a bit. After disassembling the front stack again I noticed that I put the thrust-plate in the wrong way round (it has a chamfer that needs to be oriented towards the rear of the engine), spun it around and it had too little endplay. Changed it to the "D" spacer that was originally in there and et voilà I've got a wonderful endplay of 0,055mm now.

Moral of the story: if you got too much endplay don't be stupid like me and put that thrust-plate on wrong

Thanks to everyone for the input guys

 I nearly suggested to check that but thought it would raise the plate and cause a lock up but of course it lifts the spacer thus increasing the gap.
Well done in finding the cause.
