Announcement: New recall for R3s

Post by warpc0il »

We have become aware of a new recall affecting R3 model RX-8s, referenced as AM034A

Details are sketchy at present and we have few details as to the scope, either of the work involved or the specific vehicles it applies to.

Malcolm Case [Casey] in his role as Club Secretary has officially contacted Mazda UK, who advised that...
Mazda UK wrote:I can confirm AM034A is a recently released recall that affects certain RX-8 R3 vehicles and relates to a concern with the fuel pump sealing rings. As with any new recall campaign, the details are made live within the dealer systems prior to the owners being notified, as it takes a few days to get the details of the registered keepers from DVLA at which point the mailings can then be put together and sent out. We are in the process of acquiring this data and it is hoped that those customers affected will be notified in the next week or so.
...and in a follow-up message...
Mazda UK wrote:In relation to the recall, we do not know for sure that all Mazda RX-8 R3 models will be affected.
We have today received confirmation the letters will start mailing tomorrow.
All we would be able to advise at this stage is that some R3 owners can expect to receive a Safety Recall letter in the next few days so to keep an eye out for it. When it does arrive it is important to have this recall completed so we would recommend contacting the local Mazda Dealership to arrange a mutually agreeable booking time at this point.
It would seem that the recall is similar to the one that applied to the S1 models and we hope that Mazda and the dealers have learnt from the mistakes made previously, and that this work will be carried out in a manner that increases the safety of these vehicles, and not the reverse.

We will keep this thread updated as and when we receive more details as to the work required and the vehicles involved; which we assume to be within a range of VINs.

Please respond on this thread if you receive a recall letter, including the last six digits of your VIN, so we can get a picture of the rollout.

Any and all discussion on this recall will be moved here by Moderators to maintain focus on the subject, which is also why the thread is located here in the public section and not limited to members-only - bear that in mind when posting personal details or comments regarding dealers.

For any R3 owner who may have missed the long saga with what warpc0il and I believe to be a similar recall for S1 models, here is the link to that topic:

TBF this was always going to happen. It was released in the US for Series 2 models earlier this year...

Mines popped up for 300153. I know I don't have VINs logged on the R3 register, but could check the MOT database for some of the early and late ones.

My love for Tijuana has the recall as well - from the 15th of Dec.

Vin ends 301203 - mine's one of the last R3s off the line in December 2010 so I expect it covers all R3s.

I've also checked a friend's R3 (DG11POJ) which was registered March 2011 and that has the recall.

Almost certain that you have, but insist that the dealer fills the tank prior to collection to check for leaks.

Mine is showing recall as well, cannot confirm VIN rn but will edit in due course.

I am concerned having seen chatter about the issues with some S1's. Is it possible to outline things to look for/ask for or places recommended or strongly advised against going?

To be fair, the fuel tank setup is practically identical to the S1, so I imagine they have as much of a handle on it as they will ever have...

At least the materials that make up the components won't be so old and potentially brittle on an R3 than some of the older S1's.

That said, doing the job properly on an S1 isn't rocket science and should be easy for a trained mechanic.
However, because Mazda don't make much allowance for labour in these jobs, dealers are tempted to use their lowest paid staff and/or not give it the attention it needs. Many also don't download the latest version of the instructions, so lessons learnt and corrections made, don't get through to the troops on the ground.

Hopefully, given that this is a different Service Campaign reference, dealers will be forced to download a copy of the instructions, that should be right first time, incorporating the updates made for the S1.

Do you have a copy of the instructions Dave?

My preference would be to have the dealer do it to get the recall recorded as complete.

Then order the parts needed myself and do it again, properly at home!

We don't have any more details of the work or parts, and Mazda won't share the dealer instructions with us.

I have access to many of the Mazda systems but not the one that includes that data.
