60000 miles vs breaking Mazda rx8 s1

Post by Peterovicz »

Hey guys What is your opinion on the rumors about broken 60,000-mile engines? Is it true that they break down after driving so many miles? I am asking because I am planning a trip to Poland and I would not like the car to stop halfway (currently I have almost 59,850 miles)

Thanks.
Dan

They don't suddenly stop working, if it's running fine now, it will probably still run fine in 10,000 miles as long as services are carried out. I had my first engine fail at 39,000 miles, hot starts were impossible and cold starts were difficult to say the least, but once stated it would still run and drive "reliably" until stopped then it would need to be cold to start again. There is no specific point at which these engines fail, driving style, maintenance and luck of the draw affect engine life, there are plenty reaching 80-90,000 miles

I have an engine on 117k miles and it still runs, not 100%. But it runs. It all depends on how well it has been maintained.

I would imagine that the 60K figure comes from the original coils starting to degrade at 30K. Eventually you'd get unburnt fuel blocking the cat, then a blocked cat damaging the engine. So by 60K you end up with a dead cat, useless coils and a dead engine making for a scrapped RX8 :(

I may be joining the dots incorrectly but this seems to have happened more than once. That said, like was said above, if you're starting hot and cold, don't worry about Poland at least as far as the engine is concerned :D

My Rx8 had 90k when I've decided to rebuild it and engine parts has been in re-usable state so there is not not definition of 60k miles that will be game over. In Poland rotary specialists recommend to open the engine for a inspection at around 60k miles
