Day Ruined by Knackered Fuel Pipe Connection

Post by Jonny52002 »

I should have been at Blyton Park at this moment, but instead trying to figure out the best way to fix this issue with my RX8.

Car has been driving fine for weeks, I set off this morning to head to Blyton Park and after a mile the car just cut out no warning. I thought it it had run out of fuel as it was running low so managed to get it to side of road, rang the missus and managed to get her to take me to get more fuel. put the fuel in and wouldn't start still, luckily got AA cover a couple of week ago so called them out. The guy was very knowledge about these to be fair, any way waffling.

So checked in the engine bay and found that the fuel inlet pipe had come off under pressure, the the red clip isn't holding it in place, all could do in the short term is tie wrap it to get me home see pics.

Will I need to get a full section of pipe to fix this or can you just get the end clip, I've looked around but not really seen an answer. I did have the fuel recall would these lines have been part of that ?

Any help would be much appreciated, spent a lot of time to get my RX8 ready for track recently and wasn't best pleased with it this morning, hopefully can get something back form today and put it towards one in November if I can get this fixed easily.

Big Pete should have plenty of those ends but make sure the little insert /wedge is sitting correctly first

Or take the plastic pipe off and replace with 9mm rubber hose. It's what I've done on my car and it's lasted for 20k miles +

something to check is the condition of the o-ring seal inside the connector, if its a bit tired then the connector wil not grip the pipe very well

Thanks for the response guys.

Tried BigPete unfortunately not something he has.

I ordered a replacement connector but didn't realise there was plastic pipe under the rubber pipe, I thought I'd be able to pull the old connector out but that's not the case. Dont suppose the plastic pipe can be cut back can it just above the old connector and a new one put in ?

I've put a jubilee clip around the original connector now which is clamping the red plastic clip in place which I think is the part causing the issue, its a better bodge but not sure its best way forward in the long run.

I tried to apply heat to that joint and it didn't end well. No idea how they formed that joint

Its actually pretty hard to to just replace these ends as you have to heat the plastic pipe so its soft enough to accept the new end
so you 'may' be able to cut the old fitting off and fit your new one but its not easy

the more usual practice is to repalce the whole pipe with a new part as its quite short and not actually too expensive for new ( or take Chris' kind offer)

but you will have to remove the upper inlet manifold to get to the other end on the fuel rail

Having thrown my hat over the wall regarding having one of these pipes I thought I had better go and actually look in my "bitsa" hose box and buried at the bottom was this! If you are very lucky you may just be able to thread this through under the inlet manifold even though the existing pipe may not come out due to being clamped somewhere which I don't think it is
