Opinions on under car rustproofing….

Post by Judderman »

Hey everyone, so, as per title.

I’m looking to get my 8 undersealed / rustproofed.

I welcome everyone opinions, but anyone that has had this done already, I’d be interested what product / service was used, and how well the procedure coped / lasted over time.

I have seen placed advertising Waxoyling the underside. Others using an asphalt based sealer (all come with loose rust cleaning off first and a preventative solution added to turn the current rust back into metal.

I live in the UK, so if anyone does recommend where they had theirs done - shipping the car to the US might be a stretch :P

Thanks in advance.

A lot of the club members including myself have actually recently had theirs done by Krown Rustproofing in Birmingham [thread here], which use a non-setting sorta liquidy thing (very technical term, I know  a quick Google search or someone more knowledgeable on here can tell you more ;)) and it's put into every cavity you can think of and he knows his RX-8s well, so 3rd brake light, boot floor, sills, door cavities, pretty much every single nook and cranny + the prone to rust bits specific to the 8.

And just to slide it in there, along with many other benefits of joining the club, you'd be able to get a discount on it too at Krown if you were to join the club! If I'm not mistaken it's 10%? I'm sure someone can fact check me on that one, but yeah - added insentive ;) :p

Price to members is £245 (so without discount would have been ~£270). Done in a few hours, bit longer on the R3 with mine due to skirts etc but even on the R3's all trim panels, boot carpet/lid, skirts, wheels and loads more come off and it's all done proper and in a timely manner :P would recommend! And as i'm sure many others on here would say anyways, you get back the price of membership very easily through deals and group buys, so if you're looking at going to go to krown then it'd definitely be worth it ;) you can also head back for a top up 6 months later to get some extra, and while you're there the first time, they'll go through the car with you and check all the common spots and sort it, or if anythings out of shape they'll let you know :thumright:

Thanks HarSc, that’s very tempting. Ive been quoted £125 to have all the underside Waxoyld. I think I’ll bow to the power of the forum - as I’m sure you’ve all done some ‘research’ beforehand :) :thumleft:

Robert uses high pressure air to blast loose rust and flaking under seal off the car and then the fluid when sprayed on creeps under the edge of the remaining under seal stopping water penetration and stopping further rusting.
My six month free top up is overdue so I must get the car booked in!

Your car hood (bonnet in the UK) is made of aluminium alloy, so there's no risk of that rusting.

This interests me, I've been thinking about getting my 5 undersealed ( yes I'm in Ireland and there's companies here that do it but if I was over in blighty I'd get it done, I don't mind travelling)

Is all this done in a day? Drive in/drive out so to speak? Can't believe how reasonable the price is

Not entirely sure what Krown is like, but if its like that horrible waxy, messy underseal stuff that picks up crap as time goes on, then, no person whom works on your car afterwards is going to thank you for it.

What I'm currently doing to mine in preparation for the new engine and turbo kit.

It is waxy film/fluid that does pick up grime and dirt. I know the chap I take mine for an MOT with doesn't love it or any of my cars with it on, but it's effective - so is worth it imo over using the black rubberised stuff or nothing at all.

It's a pain as it does get everywhere when you remove parts etc, but most the time it's me doing that anyway :P

Also don't think I've ever seen any mechanic be clean after working on any old car tbh, so sure while it's not a great thing that it gets on stuff, it's not the end of the world imo if a car has it on.

Looks like a damn good restoration that your cars getting, so hats off to you there. Can't wait to do similar to mine one day! \:D/

There's a world of difference between a totally strip and rebuild, which gives you all sorts of opportunities to get it right, though I'd still spray and waxy protection inside box sections, compared to what can be achieved with a drive-in-drive-out process with minimal trim removal.

The tarry black underseals are definitely the worse both for working on the car after and when they crack and lift, trapping water behind, giving a totally false impression of the state of the material underneath.

With the Krown process the arch liners, rear lights, undertray and numerous bungs are removed enabling the fluid to be sprayed inside the sills, chassis rails and even subframes, exc; on R3s, so every possible surface is covered. By spraying the coil overs they certainly do get filthy over time but are easily cleaned off to reveal their pristine in rusted surface and the adjusting rings don’t seize.

Speaking with the guy at Krown that has done all ours, while he was doing mine. He mentioned that most of the reasonably local mazda dealers take MX5s to him from New for treatment as those and the new Yaris are particularly vulnerable and poorly protected. May be worth giving him a call.
