Excitement - New wheels

Post by RX8R3Rod »

Excited today, got a new set of 20” ATS Racelights.

And they really are light when you pick them up.

I’ve not weighed them yet, but including packaging they qualify as a 10kg 📦 , so let’s say they don’t weigh 11kg plus 😄

And what a nice touch having a wheel tea-cosy to protect them whilst in transit.

Now I just hope they fit.

Once you start swapping brake discs and callipers I guess it’s difficult to be sure until you try it.

They look ok … but hopefully more on that this weekend 🤞

As Milos says, what calipers are you running that 20s may not fit?!

If it's a case of whether they fit in the arches without rolling etc. then that's a valid question - unless you're running little thin strips of rubber... lol

Re: Excitement - New wheels

Post by RX8R3Rod »

I’ve got biggish K-sports front and rear.

The concern is not so much that the callipers fit within the diameter of the wheel (which they should as my current Oz’s are 20”) but that the calipers don’t foul the spokes.

When Rotary Revs fitted Cheryl’s K-sport front calipers they only cleared the spokes of her 18” Ultralagerra’s with < 1mm to spare. Looks great,.. but Phew!!

The gap from my calipers to my Ultralegerra’s is a bit bigger than that, but the section of the Racelight spokes nearest the hub looks a bit deeper than the Oz’s.

Hence my lack of total surety that they’ll fit.

But I’m hoping …🤞

I thought the spoke to caliper clearance is more of an issue but for that it also has to be massive calipers :D and deep dish which these don't seam to have :)

That’s absolutely what I’m hoping for!

And with my experience of Cheryl’s fitting rather more by luck than judgement, it seems best to be cautious until I can try it.

And they are indeed 40 offset, which is Approximately the same as my current Oz’s.

I have a picture of an Oz with a 35mm offset on my phone, but I’m pretty sure that was on my track wheels, which stick out a bit further than the road wheels.

Great to hear Iain, those mods you’ve done will, I’m sure, make the MX5 look a whole lot more settled and purposeful. :thumright:

And that BBR package will, I imagine, make it go like a scalded rat :thumright: :thumright:

If you have any photos … [-o<

And hi Nigel and Malcolm, really nice to hear from you. :)

My apologies, I hadn’t realised I’d been so quiet of late #-o

Project thread Rod ( and chats and whatever else  ) just skip to the latter pages for up to date pics. She's lowered now and also has RB ARB''s aswell as an IL Motorsports back box.

Going to underseal her next and then 4 new boots, also toying with the idea of getting the wheels refurbed :-k

Amazing lights Rod, really are 8)

Lower and wider is defo the way to go. The bang you get for your buck visually is great. I love the squat and aggressive stance she has now

I certainly wouldn’t try and race you from the lights! ;)

And so far good news. :)

The Racelights clear the calipers, but despite being the ‘same’ offset as the Oz’s do stick out more.

And I can’t help but think there’s something missing … #-o

So the final hurdle will be cleared when I have tyres on and there’s no snagging at the rears.

Haven’t yet opened all the boxes to check if spigot rings were included, but if not I guess I may need a set before getting them on the car.

It’ll be interesting to see how it looks with silver wheels. :-k

I’m not wholly optimistic on that, but as I couldn’t get the Racelights in graphite there’s always Wheelcraft locally to refinish them if need be, I guess.

I kind of get the feeling Rod that you may have a bit of a sinking feeling after buying them, by that I mean that they may have not quite turned out what you expected them to be?

Hope I'm wrong obvs, wait til you get the tyres on Rod and see what's what I guess. Just curious as to why the change from the OZ wheels? I saw them in the flesh when I met you that day in RR and they were absolutely beautiful, was it a weight thing? I thought the OZ wheels were circa 8KG anyways?

Hope you end up being happy with the wheels Rod when all is said and done. Whatever you decide to do the car is still bloody gorgeous!!

BTW Rod these are the LED's, not cheap but they are awesome, sorry for the pic orientation, my phone does that sometimes and I dont know why? If you can't find them online I'll ask the guy who fitted them fit me where he got them

you have to load the suspension up to compare the offset to the car. As they are compressed the top will get "inward" because of camber change and will take a different "look" if you raised both wheels on same axle and compared the rims than different story ofc.

Were the OZ wheels also 8.5" wide?
