Potential new recall for S1 owners

Post by Dr. FrankenRex »

Not sure if this affects RX8s and whether it affects cars outside of the US, but posting here for discussion.

Indeed, looks like it. Love it when they put the big details right at the hard bit to see in the articles

The recall is for 3s at the moment but that seems to only be because of the large numbers sold and the cynical reality of recalls.

Hopefully they'll include the 8 in time... and recall the drivers airbag as well.

They did a driver's airbag recall on the 8 a couple of years ago.

I should have specified the S2 drivers airbag, which I believe wasn't included in that recall but uses the Takata airbag. Is the airbag in the S2 a revised version and not essentially a frag grenade like on the passenger side, which was recalled?

The R3 airbag is, I believe, a later version but I don't know that.

On the original article, I believe that the steering wheel in early 8s is the same as the equivalent gen 3, so can't see why it wouldn't be I cluded at some point.

There's also no mention of it applying in the UK yet

Got to admit the one in my 40th looks exactly like the picture. Only time will tell though I never realised it didn't apply to the UK on my first read of the article

Early rx8 (at least mine built 2004) had both airbags replaced 3 years ago in recall.

But what agrevates me is that they can replace only the "explosive part" on the passenger side. But when you want to purchase just the cover as its cracked, than it cannot be done without replacing the airbag as its not disassemblebel ... And funnily my started cracking 2 weeks after they replaced the charge patron :(

Normally when a recall/service campaign is started the current owner should receive notification through the post from Mazda if the owner at that time doesn`t comply and sell`s the car then any future owners would not be notified so it is up to them to check themselves.
