R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
Hi All, first post after getting my R3 about a month ago.
Everything with the car has been great so far except one thing ive found that has been bugging me.
About a week ago, the drivers side speaker has begun to make loud popping noises randomly.
These pops happen whether music or any sound is being played.
Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
Thanks!

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
Heya!
I just went to have a look at it, the Amp seems to be alright although I wouldnt have a clue what i should be looking for.
Funnily enough, I just spent 15 minutes in the car listening to music to try and see if I could recreate it.
Not a single pop.
Maybe it got scared once it knew I was onto it lol.

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
if you unplugged and re plugged the connections, you may find you have fixed it.

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
I did not try unplugging anything to be fair, although I will have a go reseating all the connectors if this issue comes back next time I go for a drive.
Thanks!

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
Many systems, including the audio head unit, have to do a pre-flight check before they're fully ready.
This is why it's recommended to switch the ignition On, and then wait for the passenger airbag light to go out, before turning the key further to start.
Occasional/random behaviour, such as steering wheel volume controls not working, or EQ being very strange, has been noted when the audio system isn't given this time.
Weird behaviours have also been seen with ABS/DSC, SRS (airbags), Climate Control and other systems, that have been "cured" just be getting in the habit of waiting.
Some owners have got into the habit of putting key in the ignition and switching On, before putting on their seatbelt, then starting the engine.
That said, "popping" does sound more like a connection issue...

Heya! I do actually wait after turning the key,
Like you've said, since it occurs when driving too its most likely a connection somewhere.
It'll happen during a song at a specific point, but when replaying the song it doesn't happen again at the same point, very annoying to pin down!

On a later model RX-8 It's likely this relay which is at fault, take out the door speaker and swap them with the other side to be sure.

Once the speaker is out it's good to use the opportunity to put in some sound deadening behind as it stops the energy of the speaker being wasted on moving the door skin and improves the mid bass response.

I was aware of this >>> viewtopic.php?f=30&t=76028
which is associated with door speakers cutting out.

Heya, swapping the Amps around between doors is a great idea, I'll give that a go tomorrow if I have timeuntakenname wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 7:31 pmOn a later model RX-8 It's likely this relay which is at fault, take out the door speaker and swap them with the other side to be sure.

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
Heya! Ive managed to flip the speakers around. Tested again and the pops were then coming form the other side of the car!untakenname wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 7:31 pmOn a later model RX-8 It's likely this relay which is at fault, take out the door speaker and swap them with the other side to be sure.

So it appears that the Driver side door speaker is at fault.
Is this something I can get repaired? Or should I buy a replacement?

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
Failure is so rare that you should be fine with a used replacement.
I'm sure a Wanted post would soon flush one out, or you could just ask Bigpete if he has one
>>>> ucp.php?i=pm&mode=compose&u=16453
BTW a new replacement is about £732 dealer retail
Update: yep, just checked the pricing...

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
The relay I linked to above is likely the faulty part, it also affects NC MX-5's which have the same type of door speakers with the Bose option.Xarano wrote: ↑Tue Jun 01, 2021 7:56 pmHeya! I had to fix it on my 07 Kuro passenger door which I assume is the same Bose speaker on the R3 which has the amp and speaker as one, they changed the design as the earlier Bose door speakers came in two pieces, originally I was going to simply swap out the door speaker from my older RX8 but they were different.
There's a howto guide on replacing the relay here https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-you ... ix-218790/

Re: R3 Bose Door speaker load popping
It is indeed the all in one speaker
No separate amp in the door.
To be honest id rather just get a replacement, since I have no idea how to solder things
