R3 Issues

Post by rexxy1988 »

Hello

Just acquired my R3 and trying to get to the bottom of a few issues.

ABS/DSC light
At some point during the journey the abs and DSC light will come on and stay on, after a restart they clear fine. I can’t pin point what’s triggering them as it’s come on when I’m stationary and when giving it some. People have mentioned the third brake light, wiring all seems fine and bulb not blown, might change the bulb anyway as a precaution. Any other ideals? Assume the systems will not work once the lights come on?

P2270 fault code
Again intermittently I get the following fault code up, I can reset this fine with OBD2 scanner. Miltek catback system fitted and K&N induction kit installed. Any ideas?

Fault code is just the rear sensor, replace it and see how you get on. The abs/dsc get someone to read the codes in there for you my snap on scanner access the abs module to pin point the fault rather then spending time just guessing. So if you know someone with one of those or other make try that, or just go to a garage and get them to do it.

Just bare in mind that depending on the fault, the DSC module won't always display the fault code when it switches off due to a fault. I chased endless amount of issues on mine.

Check that all 4 tires are the same size and load rating. It can even go as far as make also.

I’m planning and taking it somewhere for them to have alook into it. Not sure where though.

Recently had 4 new tyres I noticed they were all at 38PSI so I have deflated them all to 32psi. Lights came straight back on.

You can diagnose this yourself. Get a cheap blue obd adapter off ebay and download forscan. Run some diagnostics on the abs pump and see if all the wheel speed sensors are reading the same.

I’ve ordered one so hopefully try that. I tried connecting the scangauge2 into the laptop but it wouldn’t connect.

It came on again today when I was stationary which makes me think it’s not the wheel sensors but who knows.

I have had a wheel speed sensor need doing on a few MX-5 NCs, the lights will come on at any time whether stationary or not.
It’s a dealer only part for MX-5 but not too horrendously priced thankfully - hopefully that’s the same for RX-8.

Yes I can see if one of the sensors is reading wrong even at standstill it would throw up an error.

OBD2 plug came this evening plugged it in and used car scanner app. Doesn’t seem to support monitoring wheel speed though for the RX8. I can’t get it to connect to FORScan, do you need to have the purchased one? Will try again with the laptop tomorrow.

As has been said my money is on a wheel speed sensor. You're in luck having an R3 as the sensor is not integrated in to the hub like they are on the S1!

Easy and relatively cheap fix if it is, but it should show up on an OBD scan.

If you have an android device then I'd recommend Torque Pro for fault diagnositcs.

Or alternatively forscan lite which can pick up more codes (sometimes).

If you’re anywhere near Staffordshire I have an abs diagnostic unit, that will pick up any wheel speed sensors ect on them. Happy to plug it in and show you the codes 👍

The sensors are all slightly different, front/rear, left/right.

I can’t find an app that will work with the OBD adapter for iOS that will display wheel speed sensors.

I’ve got the FORSCAN app on the laptop but can’t connect it to the OBD adaptor.

Is there an app I need to upgrade to or is it best to get another OBD adaptor that will work with forscan?

I think your connection issue will be down to whether you need to use Bluetooth or WiFi with the laptop.
iOS is I think only WiFi

I have a cable to connect Forscan on a laptop to OBDII. Cheap on Amazon or EBay. Works fine on several motorbikes and cars.

If the cause isn’t the brake light then it’ll be a sensor, either a fault on it, muck or a broken tooth. I was, on a Honda Accord, able to check resistances at the ABS connector; I’m on my phone so can’t check that will work on an RX8, but, in any case, advise you check codes first.

I’ve removed an R3 sensor easily enough, but that was at fewer years of corrosion (the hub still corrodes around the plastic). If the code is for a sensor then I recommend buying one in advance of removing.

Well ive booked it into a garage in hope that i wont smash my laptop with frustration.

with Regards to P2270 O2 sensor, is that likely to just be a replacement senor as the previous owner said it only appeared after the catback system was fitted.

Decided the give the car a clean today and gave the hubs a good jet wash. Curiosity got the better of me and the wheel ended up off, I’d hoped to check the sensor was producing a voltage but couldn’t find the other end of the sensor. It seems to disappear into the engine bay. Then the wife urgently needed the car typical so I had a pit stop to get it back together. On the plus side the lights didn’t come on. Fingers crossed they stay off.
