Old member after R3
Hi all! I am in the market for an R3. Currently looking at one that Kent Rotaries have for sale, compression test has just been under taken by The Performance Shop results coming in at:
Front 6.3-6.0-6.1
Rear 6.2-6.4- 6.1
Crank 250
Apparently this R3 has been last owned by club member, private plate RX08 RAG in red.
I've been away from the club for years now and can't really remember how these numbers stack up, maybe a little on the border line.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
Looking forward to rejoining the club!
Thanks
Darren

Re: Old member after R3
Yeah the numbers are borderline, but the wear is reasonably even too. Depends on the price, but even with those numbers, you should get a good few miles out of it

Re: Old member after R3
On autotrader - 46,418 miles at £6,995 for that compression... it can be a good car, and as said above, the compression is very even so that's a good thing - although it is on the lower side of things, still ok numbers. Just depends on what you're comfortable paying for it, I'd probably be wanting to be lower than the asking, but then again we can all say that one hah!
Does look a tidy car though, so definitely a good contender

Re: Old member after R3
At them compression figures what kind of milage is he likely to get before rebuild ?
I know it's hard to say but around ? We talking 1000s or 10000s of thousands ? I've drove a few with them compression results drove/started perfectly

Re: Old member after R3
My honest thoughts as a prospective Rx8 owner/serial Rx7 owner would be that's priced high for my liking with low 6 compression. 8's being a new engine. 5 being rebuild stage it's obviously now at the lower end of the scale.
The readings are quite low for the mileage on the engine too which shows possible lack of correct oil etc in it's past at some stage.
If it was be buying the car I would be prepared to rebuild in 10/15k.
All based on my own opinions of course.
But if your asking nthe question I guess the doubt is there.

Re: Old member after R3
It could have just been driven wrong, holding the revs low by changing up too soon, causing a build-up of carbon and reducing the measured compression.
If this is the case then an "Italian Decoke" followed by a few more miles driven properly might be all it needs to get those numbers back up in the green, as many on here have proved.

This is what I was thinking after reading that quite a few have had compression tests of 6s then after driving it as should a later compression test in 7swarpc0il wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 11:49 amIt could have just been driven wrong, holding the revs low by changing up too soon, causing a build-up of carbon and reducing the measured compression.

Re: Old member after R3
When I first tested my R3 one chamber reading was low at 5.9 and the others were mid to high 6's. It was suggested to drive it hard as it could be just a build up from the previous owner.
I drove it hard and subsequent testing each year showed improvements of high 6's and 7s.
It was 3 years before a side seal actually went after approximately 20k miles and numerous trackdays.

Re: Old member after R3
I'd get the price down using that compression figure as a bargaining point say £5500 ? as a decent rebuild is 2K at least

Re: Old member after R3
I think it's interesting to hear of such a big swing in compression numbers and for some could make the risk of certain cars worth while, given the right price ? Although with this example £7k is alot to gamble on.
The only figure we have is compression in the low 6's. It might come up or it might not.
Darren, what are you thinking of doing?

Re: Old member after R3
We also don't know how she starts. If she starts on the nose, hot or cold then I'd be less concerned.
Also if the prospective owners mileage is only going to be 2/3k per year, it might be a good 5/6 years before there is even a chance of a rebuild.
I'd go and see the car, if it all adds up then see if you can get a good deal. Only you will know if its worth walking away from.

Re: Old member after R3
Thank for your responses
I’ve just brought today an R3 from Nick from Enjoyable Cars in Berkshire in Sparking black.
Compression in the high 6’s low 7’s.
Just driven it back to the West Midlands (in heavy rain) and its perfect! It’s great to be back!
I have rejoined the club sent my PayPal payment yesterday morning just still awaiting for admin to upgrade my account which will hopefully be soon
Ill update my avatar etc soon and say hello in the “i’m new year pages”
Looking forward to meeting up with people again
Cheers
Darren

I literally hate you. It looked an excellent car. Sounds like a better place to start from compression wise..DJonesy wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 3:43 pmThank for your responses
