Rebuilt engine recommendations

Post by julian.rx8.207 »

Hi guys,

I'm Julian from Germany. Unfortunately I blew the bearings in my 6-port engine the other day and because only 1(!) workshop in Germany still offers rebuilds and they charge a fortune I decided to look abroad. As I will probably need new housings as well it would likely make sense to get myself a complete rebuilt engine and keep my old one. Is there any place in the UK that you guys would recommend?

Regards
Julian

While the workshop in Germany might charge a fortune I'd investigate what extra taxes will be incurred by the UK no longer being in the EU before going ahead with getting work done/buying parts in the UK.

Worth speaking to Clive at Mazda Rotary Parts as he can supply new Renesis engines.

Those in the EU not longer pay VAT to UK companies but do so on entry to the their country, in theory there is no overall increase in costs to the end consumer post brexit.

In practice post brexit it's now cheaper and faster for me to buy car parts from Germany then the UK, brexit solved my ebay addiction in a big way.

My costs have gone up like 30-40% since they started talking about the sh*t of a deal we ended up with, no overall increase, yeah, that's why small businesses were crumpling left right and centre even before covid...christ now I have to go through customs just to and from Northern Ireland. #-o

Alright guys, thanks a lot for the feedback.
I will have to look into the options, Ryan Rotary Performance sounds very promising.

Btw. even though I will have to pay import-taxes a import will still be cheaper. A rebuild with a streetport, new housings and a new e-shaft would be like 7000€ I think, I can find myself a new RX-8 for that price :)

Thinking about trailering the car to the UK at this point. Is there any good rebuild service in England (preferably southern england) that you can recommend. They don't need to sell a whole engine like I wanted before but rather offer a rebuild with new housings (in case they would be required) and a streetport option for a reasonable price, I don't want to cheap out on that subject 3-4k£ would be perfectly fine for a rebuild. RotaryRevs sounds really good but that would be quite a trip from where I live, if there is no other good service I'll totally do it anyways.

Left field option, but RXMotors in Salisbury do rebuilds. Tim's a Wiz and although I've not personally had a rebuild done by him I've only ever heard good things about his work.

I seem to remember he's not big on porting though, so if that's what you want then may be worth looking elsewhere.

If distance from a channel crossing is a serious factor, then you could consider "The Performance Shop", based in Orpington in Kent - about 60 miles from Dover.

https://theperformanceshop.co.uk/pages/engine-rebuilds

I have no direct experience of the company, but have noted a growing number of positive customer comments on Facebook pages/groups.

Check the customs requirements for transporting the car in and out if England as I am pretty sure you will require a customs carnet to import the car to England and then export it after the work is complete.

You didn't before, you might now, the MSA was trying to negotiate something because it was going to be a big issue for racecars going to race and back, needing a carnet to prove you weren't using it to export parts/cars/avoid customs.

Good ol' Brexit.

I did contact both, unfortunately RyanRotary is booked out for another 4 months, no response from Rotary Revs yet (to be fair I've only contacted them this afternoon)

RXMotors was recommended to me by Pete, I've sent them an e-mail through their contact-form yesterday but no response yet. But I would really like to get a streetport when the engine is taken apart anyways

The RX-8 as well as my Audi A4 that I will use for towing are registered in Germany. From a customs point of view wouldn't it be the same as if I were to drive the RX-8 across the border?

Rotary Revs I'd suggest ringing them rather than emailing I always phone them up 01924 477202 You'll probably speak to Aimee and she will probably talk you through the different options etc.

They are rebuilding mine with a street port and a lot of extras start of June and they've been super helpful on the phone with me so I'd 100% phone them

Driving a car back and forth isn’t an issue with customs but it’s when the car is transported on a trailer that there is a requirement for the customs carnet.

As another data point, I've had two rebuilds on my car, one in 2019 and one in 2020. The performance shop did the second one, fixing issues introduced by the first rebuilder. I had a street port done as well.

I am very happy with my second rebuild so based on my experience I'd highly recommend TPS.

Really struggling with understand the British law there. Is this really a thing? I'm now reading everywhere that VAT-free shopping was only applicable until December 31st 2020. If I were to pay no VAT within the UK this would make a huge difference in pricing

Thanks for the recommendation v-rex, I'll check them out as well

When mine eventually needs it, Josh at The Performance Shop will get my car for a rebuild. Had my minimap done there, he had a general look over the car and gave me a few bits to look at, without pushing parts on me.
