Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
You still have to pay the VAT it just that you pay it in you country of residence. Historically the seller required proof of export before they could legally not charge VAT on a sale. That was for goods being shipped out of England (and the EU when we were a member) The buyer then paid duties abound taxes upon importing to their country of residence and my guess is that this is how things now work between England and current EU members. That said I just bought from Autodoc in Germany and they charged me 20% VAT so it’s somewhat confusing.
I suggest you contact the German customs office and describe your situation ask them to clarify what the VAT rules are.
Carl’s comment basically sums up the situation I reckon.

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
You might find that VAT is payable locally, at your country rate, on the total landed cost of the item.
This would include the purchase price, shipping, insurance and any handling charges.

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
It's not at 20% that's for sure. I sent a single R3 wheel to Germany with a customs declared estimated value of £300 for insurance. The recipient was charged £99 in tax...!

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
I've had a quick look at that and it makes interesting reading.
Will have a proper read through this evening.

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
I think it might be helpful if someone started a dedicated thread on this subject with accurate information updated in the first post regarding changes since Brexit.
Most of this info is not relevant to Julian and is just confusing the issue.
There’s always been a difference in duty between complete vehicles and spares when imported into this country ( EU was different ) shipping was added then VAT on everything .

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
Sorry for the late reply guys
I will have to have a closer look at taxes and duties before getting it rebuild for sure.
I'll contact TPS in the next couple of days, they would be a great option as they are close to Dover.

It's 19% actually, duty is different for each item tough, for a petrol engine it is 4,5%Dr. FrankenRex wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 9:08 amIt's not at 20% that's for sure. Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
reading that pistonheads thread it seems its a bit of a lottery as it depends on where the goods have originated and VAT should come off and then go on again ( at a different rate )
plus some carriers apply a handling fee and you then pay UK VAT on that fee and the carrier charges.....

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
If only. If the person I'd sent the wheel to had been requested to pay 19% then they would have only been billed £57, not the £99 they were billed... as 350Matt says, it seems to be a bit of a lotteryjulian.rx8.207 wrote: ↑Mon May 17, 2021 11:32 pmIt's 19% actually, duty is different for each item tough, for a petrol engine it is 4,5%Dr. FrankenRex wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 9:08 amIt's not at 20% that's for sure. Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
If you are bringing the whole car over for a 'track day' and then going home again on a trailer, would they know you had the engine 'serviced' while in the UK?

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
This is a pretty good idea to be fair... If it looks like a fully functioning car then they'll probably be OK?geofftl1000r wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 12:40 pmIf you are bringing the whole car over for a 'track day' and then going home again on a trailer, would they know you had the engine 'serviced' while in the UK?

Re: Rebuilt engine recommendations
My advice is to play it straight with guidance from German customs. Whoever does the work is legally obliged to charge VAT on all sales unless they have evidence the goods are being exported. It’s not with risking it with HMRC and it’s German counterpart as VAT evasion is a serious offence and you don’t want investigation by HMRC.
I am not an expert in these matters this is just my personal view.

Honestly, this I had that same idea but I really don't want to risk anything. I don't think anybody would notice if I will just pay the British VAT but if it gets noticed I'm f...ed, not worth the riskgeofftl1000r wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 12:40 pmIf you are bringing the whole car over for a 'track day' and then going home again on a trailer, would they know you had the engine 'serviced' while in the UK?

That's the right answer, especially in the publicly accessible part of the forum, which is also within the scope of Google searches.julian.rx8.207 wrote: ↑Tue May 18, 2021 2:40 pmHonestly, this I had that same idea but I really don't want to risk anything.
