Connector not connected

Post by Andy____ »

Hi, going over my new (to me ) rx8.
Runs well, but at the front there is this;

It’s right at the front, by the a/c pipes.
What’s it for, and why would it be disconnected?

I appear to have a battery drain, possibly related??
Thanks

It's the connection for the coolant level warning light.

As is common, the float in your tank has forgotten it's only job and as it sinks so the warning light comes up on the dash.

Many people disconnect as just check the level manually.

Note that Max is only half way up the tank, only check when cold.

Lots of discussion on here.
Search for "coolant level"

And no, it won't be associated with a battery drain.

See FAQ "Why did my battery go dead..."

In engineering and scientific circles, the technical description of the design of this component, is piece of complete and utter :censored: :censored: :!:

I have owned 4 RX8's and all of them came with this connector already disconnected

The tank is not repairable so If you wish to replace it that will cost anything from £110+ for a pattern part to £180+ for a Mazda part.

Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll just leave it disconnected.

I’m loving the car, never had a rotary before.

Or you could try you luck with a used one off eBay and spend a little time cleaning it out.

I did and now have all plugs plugged in and no dash lights on

Back with my first 8 I thought I woukd treat her to a new tank for a similar cost. Back then RotaryRevs didnt exist so I went to another well respected specialist in Yorkshire and asked for a new tank to be ordered and fitted.

When I went to collect the car I got told some story that the postman couldn't find this companies industrial unit and so they had 'used a hot knife to open the tank, cleaned, resealed and refitted", for a big cost saving. Being young(er) and dumb I didn't really question and was pleased to see the warning light had gone, but most of the 200 odd quid from my wallet hadnt. It was only a few months later that Ben at his parents house (the forerunner to RotaryRevs) spotted that the connector had been carefully seated in the socket but not fully pushed home.

Naturally I never went back to that specialist and thankfully I think most/all of their RX8 business shifted to RotaryRevs.

If anyone reading this does decide to replace their tank, don't attempt to pull the small pipe off the top of the radiator - it WILL break the radiator and being plastic it can't be repaired.

Cut the pipe, remove the tank, you should then have sufficient access to remove the remains of the pipe without straining the radiator.

A new tank should come with a new pipe, if not then #N3H1-15-184D @ £25.20 + VAT, is still cheaper than a new radiator.
