Scrapping a Cat -> update, not the Cat

Hi , My car threw a CEL recently and I suspect the CAT is the cause. Has anyone secured a scrap value for their old CAT when replacing with a new one? I assume given the value of a CAT that some of the replacement cost can be covered by the sale of the dead CAT?

Would be interested to know of anyones experience.

It must depend how "failed" the cat is.

A physically broken cat will often still pass emissions tests and not trigger a CEL, though it will restrict exhaust gas flow, causing other performance issues. Eventually the local overheating can cause a fire, scorching of the underbody, or a meltdown of the core of the cat, at which point it has little on no commercial scrap value.

A cat-related CEL could be the cat, but it's just as likely to be the rear O2 sensor, or it's associated wiring, or even a fault with the ignition.

Failing coils, leads and/or plugs can result in such poor combustion that the cat can't cope and the O2 sensor sees the result as a cat issue. Anything that causes either or both trailing plugs to not fire is (almost) undetectable while driving but has a massive impact on emissions, and further increases fuel consumption.

Similarly, if the Intake Air Temperature sensor were to misread, then the PCM could continue to use a cold-engine fuel map, even when the engine is hot, having the same effect.

Times have changed.

I posted about this a few months ago and stated that a Kent based company had offered me a sum over the phone, then a few hours later received an email from a moderator telling me my post had been removed because it might encourage someone to aim for RX8s and their cats.

I think you'll be unlucky to have the 8 in general as a target really. There are so few around in comparison to other car models that have better cats to nick or easier access, they likely won't bother. And if you've got lowering springs/coilovers, it's even harder (and maybe even the subframe braces, as they're in the way of the cat!)

And yeah, there are enough posts on FB and everywhere else about 8 cats, so yeah, right call imo

I’m glad I don’t have one on my car.
It was me who reported the post as I remember the last time and suggested it was moved.
I think sending the op a link would have been appropriate rather than bandying prices around.

the information is not in the least bit restricted to this forum. the lowlifes that steal cats are fully aware of exactly which cats are worth the most and would be unlikely to be coming on this forum looking for that information, it is freely available elsewhere, Facebook for example.

in fact, threads like this that list responsible recyclers who comply with regulations and only pay by traceable means arguably help reduce cat theft, not increase it.

I’ve bought 2 Rx-8’s that have been written off because of this, one how ever had an aftermarket cat on it so they don’t know what there looking for. If I was you Pete get it engraved with decat in big letters just in case they target your car.

So I discovered that the CAT was not a problem. The reader showed the following codes:

Intake valve control circuit low (Bank 1) P0076 and P0076-FF and

Metering oil pump stepping motor#4 control circuit P1688-FF.

The CEl is off and has not re appeared as yet. Has anyone dealt with these faults/ and would using Cataclean help by removing some of the carbon built up in over 100K miles ?

where you described the car not revving over 3-3.5K and the fault code above, "Metering oil pump stepping motor#4 control circuit P1688"

That is classic "limp mode" due to a OMP (Oil Metering Pump) issue. Have a look here: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=82755 ***

I suffered this recently and replaced the OMP with a used one to fix the fault. TBH, I am beginning to suspect I might have got away with repositioning or replacing the sensor switch on the OMP, rather than the complete unit.

I can't help with the other fault code.

Belated thanks to Warpcoil and Casey for their replies to my earlier question re the Oil metering pump / stepping motor Fault P1688-FC and P0076- intake valve control circuit.


The faults have re appeared, and I have taken my car to the nearest( non specialist) garage. Does anyone have a sensor for the OMP, or know where to source one? It sounds like a good idea to check this out before replacing the whole unit.
