Electric water pump

Post by osman »

Just wondering if many have installed an ewp?
Would it add any reliability concerns at higher rpms?

If you are just using the car in the road then the original pump is fine.

As Chris says, you'll struggle to overheat a healthy RX8 on the road, even if you're 'having fun'.

On track then with a series 1 then you are a bit more susceptible to cavitation at prolonged high RPM. A cheaper solution would be to look at an underdrive pulley for the WP or to look at the Ryan Rotary Performance solution which essentially mates the Series 2 water pump (with a redesigned pump and under-driven pulley from the factory) to the S1 engine - cheaper and easier.

Obviously if you wanna be the trailblazer for an electric one, then please post your results on the forum! :D

If your power supply fails you have instant failure of your water pump.
You should consider if there are any benefits carefully

There's no free lunch.

The reduction in parasitic drag from the water pump has got to be replaced by a similar increase in drag from the alternator, to power the pump, unless you're also going to install a dedicated battery system that's charged off-line.

I'd be very wary of electric pumps, in my direct expierence of using them they almost never deliver the quoted amount of flow and faced with any restriction of any kind will flow very little at all.

really not worth the possible grenading I'd say
spend the cash on adding lightness instead ( toyo exhaust perhaps) or get a remap as you'll get more than 5bhp with that
if you are concerned about running hot then as others have said fit the S2 water pump, you can make the s2 pump fit an S1 with a little modification to the mounting studs and this will then give you all the cooling you'll need, mine never goes over 83°C on a run and most I've seen in traffic is 88°C

I’m sorry but your not going to get 5 whp and people don’t notice 5whp even if they get it.
When I was racing we had controlled engines but water pump was free so I looked at this option.
I decided against the pump and didn’t go for thinner oil either which could give me 1 HP flat out.
I did run low oil pressure so I had to blip the throttle when leaving the track to keep the pressure up.
Exhaust header wold be better and complete system if you can handle the noise ( now that could give you 10 BHP or so )

The cars already got every n/a mod done
Bridgeport, 4.77 diff r3 gear box, pulleys, flywheel
This was the last thing I could think of to extract abit more power out of it, but I think I'll leave after reading comments
Thanks for the advice :)

Didn’t realise you’d done so much to the car already.
Do you take it on track ?
