If that is the case the and especially with a mis-fire code it could be ignition related.

although I wouldn't rule out some sideseal issue causing this too, a new compression test would help rule this out.

When you do the screenshot of the OBD reader try to get the following:

LTFT - Long term fuel trim
STFT - Short term fuel trim
RPM - Engine speed
AFR - Air fuel ratio

Another quick check would be the throttle body, just make sure its not a lazy one and not flickering on closed throttle. Just exercise the pedal and you should hear it operate smoothly.
How does that translate to this app...

Not sure what APP you re using but there plenty that can display that data, I cannot see the LTFT and STFT options there.

I'm wondering if the ESS is playing-up when cold.

That is a recognised failure mode, on the crankshaft sensor on MX-5s, and they use the same sensor just on a different mount.

I recall a long thread on another forum about a car (I think is was a BMW Mini) that had all sorts of random starting/running issues, which would never re-appear when in the dealer for diagnosis.

Very long story short, the fault was finally identified as one of the units on the CANBUS putting noise on the line that was interfering with the signals between others.

Plugging in the dealers test equipment was damping the interference, so not just Sod's Law that it was fine when it was connected.

On a related note to Dave's post above... My odb2 dongle causes a network error if I start the car with the Bluetooth connected. Thought i had DSC issues untill I figured that one out.

so it's been with a mechanic up in Newcastle for a couple of weeks (not a Rotary guy but good guy overall) he swapped some of the coils round and the code changed from misfire on cyclinder 2 to random misfire. He's changed 2 of the coils and apparently it's not shown any issue the last few days.

I did have Mazda C coils and now i've got 2 NGK ones (i know looking at the forum they're not the best but trying to buy individual Mazda ones at short notice was near impossible)

I might look to get the RRP coil pack in the future

He's also fixed an oil leak that was coming from where Rotary Revs fitted the new RRP oil lines (they'd nicked the rubber seal apparently), replaced a bit of the exhaust that was precariously hanging off and new Brembos on the front.

If the misfire issue does rear its ugly head again, Clive at Mazda Rotary parts suggested it could be the wiring leading back to the ECU as he's only ever heard of apparent Mazda C coils issues once and it ended up being the wiring

At 10,000 miles I had a mazda rev c coil throw a misfire, I put it down to the magnacore leads as there was done tarnish where it plugs in to the coil(so probably a loose connection) just had my car back from a rebuild and it was throwing misfires all the time but with no noticeable effect, did the brake peddle stomp and it disappeared and hasn't come back (always worth a clean and reset)
