Information regarding Luke Murdoch

Post by Nickp47 »

Luke is no longer available, I think the club should perhaps make some sort of announcement surrounding this to avoid people attempting to contact him.

Indeed, difficult thing for the club to come out with an official position I'd say - other than its cut all ties and cannot recommend him

Re: Information regarding Luke Murdoch

Post by WildMan10 »

I’m saddened to hear this. Over the years I’ve met many people who I really liked and turned out to have an evil side.

I’m a flog ‘em and hang ‘em type of guy, but I sound a note of caution here. He has been sentenced to a period of hell in jail and a hard life when he gets out for what, although clearly evil, is relatively low on the scale of sex offences. He will have a hard enough time as it is getting his life back together, which needs to happen if he is to be rehabilitated and avoid a cycle of offending, and IMO the club should not punish him further.

I realise what I say above may be unpopular, particularly to those with young daughters ((I have none, only sons). I don’t want this thread to degenerate and be deleted so please accept this as my view and I will accept yours without argument.

Also worth noting he probably has family who have to deal with this, it must be upsetting for them too, I have seen some of the comments on Facebook, they are not pleasant.

Re: Information regarding Luke Murdoch

Post by SmuttyHutty »

It is an emotive crime and, as such, elicits different responses in people. I am not sure that the club specifically endorses mechanics and I would imagine that if it did in the future then it would not endorse Luke as a result of his conviction.

Beyond that, Luke has received his punishment from the judicial system and he has a lifetime of knowing what he did and the shame associated with that, his conviction and subsequent imprisonment.

He also has a lifetime of wondering if that man looking at him across a pub, in a supermarket or anywhere in public is the father of one of his victims...

I never realised how serious it was last evening when I made my Facebook comment, having googled his name I now know what has occurred, it would be interesting to hear if club members would use his mechanical skills in the future as he had glowing reports on his work and that at least wouldn't change and he has to be rehabilitated into society upon his release.

Re: Information regarding Luke Murdoch

Post by v-rex »

I have used his services alot over the last few years. I can understand how people are outraged over what he did, and it was inexcusable, and I am shocked as anyone, as every time I met him he was the most polite courteous person you could ever meet. It seems there were some other things going on, but I never had the first clue. I don't know if others suspected anything.

I guess what I find more strange about it all is that people are complaining about his work afterwards. So for me I can honestly say he's never done less than a stellar job with my car over the last 3 and a bit years he's worked on it. He did lose my locking wheel nut key once, but got a new one and came and fitted it after. He found my key in the van after on a clearout. Other then that he's never tried to upsell me or had to come out and fix anything again etc. Always tried to save me money and even when he's found fault with others work he's been totally professional and asked me to contact them, rather than try to get me to do the work through him. He's been spot on with any advice he's given. So based on that I've always given him a glowing recommendation. I've pretty much always stood over him whilst he worked as I was interested and so been seeing exactly what he was doing.

Reading some of the facebook comments, of course people are rightly outraged. However does this news reflect on his mechanical ability? Certainly questions have to be asked on his general credibility but I wonder why people felt it hard to come forward with the issues they had before this? I expect some bad reviews with anyone, as there is always some customers who will have a bad experience with anyone, but it seems people couldn't feel like they would come forward with their issues until this came out. I do wonder if people like me with our glowing recommendations make it harder for others to come forward, but when the work is good I do want to tell people. Luke has never asked me to do anything review wise and it's always been off my own back, as I've been happy with the work.

It's been a crazy week at work this week, and with this news, and also having some stuff going on next week that takes me out of my comfort zone, I am just unsure of anything really. I don't know what to think and questioning my judgement on alot of things, including replaying all his work in my mind and if this news changes my opinion of any of it. I don't think so, but I'm still analysing it to see if I remember anything untoward. I think I need to let it all digest before I think I can properly answer the question of would I use Luke again. This is a real curveball.

Post by Shagrington »

:whathesaid: He got me back on the road again twice - first time when my coils burned out, he fitted the car with spare used coils to tide me over until my new ones arrived then fitted the new ones in the car park at the next Surrey meet and just a month or so back when my oil metering pump failed and both times I would have been completely stuck and having to get my car stuck on a flatbed to TPS or Essex Rotary. I was both very happy with and grateful for his work on my car which was very good and very reasonably priced.

I had no clue whatsoever that anything else was going on. What he has done is unforgivable and I just can't begin to imagine what he could have been thinking, what he thought would happen ... or was he thinking anything at all. The courts have decided on his punishment, for some they will consider that was sufficient, others won't so when he has served his time individuals will decide would they want to use the services of someone who has done that sort of thing or do they play a part in his rehabilitation by providing him with work ... I don't know right now what I might do, it hasn't really sunk in yet, but it may be academic - there is a chance nobody will want him anywhere near them or their car and will he even try to start up again.

Whilst I get people's views above, as the father of a young daughter it upsets me that people like that walk among us.

With everything that's going on with the Sarah Everard stuff, the challenges women face relative to men already and then you throw in that there are people who can do things like this as well it is a truly broken world we live in.

I guess the bigger thing is whether you believe that such a thing can be changed and someone can rehabilitate from it. Sadly I don't believe someone can...

Re: Information regarding Luke Murdoch

Post by SmuttyHutty »

For Luke Murdoch the past is done. It cannot be rewritten and as I said in my earlier post he will have to live with this and the consequences for the rest of his life. Statement of fact and nothing else.

Like Ian above, I was of the beat 'em and hang 'em brigade but then mellowed. It also dawned on me that it is better for those criminals who can be reintegrated into society, and for society, for them to be given that support. To the same token, it is better for all concerned for those who cannot be reformed to remain in prison for the rest of their lives.

As for Luke and his future: when I go to Sainsbury's I don't know the background of the person serving me. I have no idea of the criminal record of the person changing the tyres on my car or doing my tax return for me. It makes no difference to the quality of the work that they, at that time are providing.

Thus, if part of Luke rehabilitation is working at a garage or being employed by Kwik Fit then I hope that he receives the support that he clearly needs and, I suspect, will need for some time.

However, working in an establishment is very different to going to people's homes.

Unlike Ian, I have daughters. Mine are 3, 11 and 13 and the 13 year old looks very 16+. And it would be irresponsible of me to knowingly bring someone into the family area who has been found guilty of committing a sex crime. I am also going to respectfully disagree with Ian about the severity of Luke's actions. If someone wishes to photograph me in a toilet cubicle then as far as I am concerned they have issues. I am a robust middle-aged man and really don't care. However, none of us has any idea of the impact of such an invasion of privacy in an intimate situation on a young girl. Maybe it would be seen as minor by the child? But maybe that child will take the scars of such an event with them for the rest of their lives.

I will also say that I did contact Luke at the end of last year because I had work to do on both of my RX8s and it seemed easier to get one mechanic here than to take both cars on separate occasions up to BigPete. However, I elected to not engage Luke as I felt that his estimation of the time required to complete the jobs was unreasonable and so I took the car that need rotary specific work to Pete and the car that needed general motoring mechanics to our local chap.

My personal choice will be to not engage Luke. I hope that he receives the support that he clearly needs and that he might consider trying to make amends to the victims of his actions and their families. What other members of this club decide is entirely a personal choice which, I hope, we will all respect.
