Another potential car popped up! VERY far away. So will only go ahead if absolutely worth it. It's a cheap one, because it has the hot start problem. Apparently it drives fine if started from cold. But once it's hot can't restart it till it cools down. The old story. So I'm looking at an engine rebuild.

The rest of the car looks good in the photos. A few new parts including a new cat. Engine bay looks decent. Said has no rust. I request photos of wheel arches and spotted a few rust spots starting. But he says the underside is not rusty. Is it really possible, when the wheel arches are starting to go? Unless the underside has been rust protected? I asked for photos of the underside but it's not available.

Anyway, this is the worst of the arches:

That's only a 17" wheel, off some other Mazda in the range, not an RX-8.

Unless it's a JDM import with the smaller brakes, that's going to be a very tight fit round the front disc/caliper

This must be the winter tyre set then. Car comes with summer and winter sets and one of them are 19".

Here's the front:

The little bit at the top of the rear wheel arch isn't ideal, and may be an indication of worse underneath, but there's no way to tell at that angle.

17" wheels for winter tyres is fine.

Based on that, should I ask for photos of any specific angles or areas?

ask for a view of the end of the sill just in front of the rear wheel arch and from directly underneath
a view looking up at the rear suspension is alos a good idea

Thanks. Would the same be important for the front wheels as well?

the front end of the sill can also rot so worth checking, however it normally starts at the top of the rear arches, allows water in there which then rots out the bottom of the sill joint and then the whole sill starts going

Ok thanks. I will ask for more photos.

By the way, I noticed that there are different vent styles on the front wings. Like the car above has the 2 fins on the vent. Some don't. Initially I thought it was a year model thing. But I noticed same year models sporting the different vents. Is the vent style dependent on trim then?

Hello mate, if i were buying a car with a bad engine,i would at least be looking for a car that has no other issues ie rust. I appreciate that these are becoming rarer, but i could not justify the cost of putting a new engine into a chassis that also needed work. good luck with your search, rob.

Those vents just have strakes fitted, as an aftermarket option.

Apparently they add at least 20hp ;)

And if you only have them on one side the cornering is amazing.....in one direction.

Sure. That would be the best. But honestly they are so hard to find here that I'm starting to think I will have to forgive some easy to get rid off rust. Unless I want to pay like 10K Euros for a running one.

By the way, I looked at my second RX8 this past weekend. The engine is out of the car and needs rebuild. I will probably not buy it, as the seller wants too much money for it. But something I noticed. The sills are not smooth. In the first one I saw, I thought this was a sign of a badly done job to cover up rust. But now this one has it too. Is this the normal for the RX8? The sills feel coarse and different than the rest of the body?

There's a stone-chip resistant layer under the paint of the sills, which has a slight hammered/rippled texture.

Ok, so this is it. Specially knocking on it, it gives different sounds along the sills, plus the hammered texture, I thought it maybe was body filler hiding rust. Good to know. Thanks!
