New key/fob
How do I get a key/fob for my RX8 please
I currently only have the 1 and it's a separate key to the fob
Key on the fob is different
Is it dealer only ? Are they expensive?

Might want to ask Pete at Boston Rotary if he has any fobs. I purchased a blank mazda switchblade key on eBay

Re: New key/fob
My understanding on keys is a bit flakey, but I believe that to program a new key into the car without needing Forscan/dealer tools is when you have two keys already. The programming is to do the remote unlock, and also to sync the immobiliser chip to the car. I think there is a way to do it where you can get a key cut and pop it into a switchblade key and then use forscan to code it in? You can pick up the actual keys pretty cheap used on ebay, or even on sites like aliexpress
Don't know if that made any sense, but I know there are a few key fob threads popping around on the forum, give it a search and they should come up
These may help?
"Forscan for the RX8" here
"Fob programming instructions" here

Re: New key/fob
That's not likely to work.
You need one with the four button, where the fourth is the internal alarm disable, not the Panic button.
Have you read this, and the related threads that it links to?

Yes Dave ,have indeed , thanks for the info
I'll have a proper read, just want to be sure of the type of fob to get, the programming part looks pretty straightforward.

Re: New key/fob
If you have (at least) two original keys then yes, the process is straightforward.
Just a couple of caveats;
- there are limits to the number of keys and fobs that can be registered to an individual car. I think it's something like 8 and 9 respectively, before you have to clear the memory. This becomes relevant if other keys/fobs were registered early in the cars history*.
- keys produced by locksmiths etc are clones of the original, so you can have as many as you like of these but the car only sees it as the same key again, not a second key for the purposes of this process.
These are the most common reasons for the process not working, other than not finding the correct replacements and/or not following the process steps exactly as written.
*We've heard of some dealers that would register "a workshop fob" to every car in their stock, and sometimes to every customer car that came in for service, just so they didn't have to find the right one for each car being worked on.

Re: New key/fob
Occured to me that a second fob would be useful/sensible. Have an 04 car, so separate key & fob. Fobs seem a bit pricey on ebay, so thought of getting a switchblade one. Have been reading stuff for hours now so just wanted to see if my head's straight on it or not. Am I right in thinking that I can:
- Get a used 4 button correct type switchblade from ebay or someone on here
- Get a new key blank
- Get the key part cut (even without knowing the code part?)
- Use the instructions in the two How To threads to encode the fob, and the immobiliser chip to my car, and it should work fine?

Re: New key/fob
As far as I understand it, you're pretty close. The only hangup you might experience is with models of keys and compatibility. Now I haven't yet got around to coding my new 4 button switchblade keys that I've got, but the general consensus seems to be that you can only use the key model that came with your car, so you can't mix & match siemens/mitsubishi/visteon model keys for your car, and I think it should be the same model number exactly too. (Craigy had a few small issues on his R3 if I remember correctly as he had one visteon 41585 and a 41787 wth some bits not working)Koren wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 9:46 pmOccured to me that a second fob would be useful/sensible. The two coding steps are for the key/immobiliser to the ignition, and the buttons to the central locking, although to do it without forscan needs two keys AFAIK?
I've got a few pretty much brand new switchblade keys of different models, and I'll be experimenting with what I can code to my car when I get round to it, I've got the blank blades to get cut first. I got a pack of 20 blanks from China as it was cheaper than any UK seller selling just 1, so after mine are cut and I check they're able to cut 'em and they come out ok, I can send you one if you want?

Re: New key/fob
You can link a flick key with the early cars, as long as it the correct one.
It has to be Visteon, with 4 buttons, where the 4th button is "internal alarm disable" not the red "panic" button.
You need two original keys to follow the process, not an original key and a "clone"

Re: New key/fob
This is one for my knowledge book, but is it exact models only? Or just same brand/ button config? Cos if that's the case I'll be making a beeline for some 41787's, as I've only ever seen and been able to buy one 41585 model that my R3 has standard it'd make it easier on getting 'em in good nick. Or will I have to be a guinea pig and see myself if it'll work and report back?warpc0il wrote: ↑Thu Jun 10, 2021 6:52 pmYou can link a flick key with the early cars, as long as it the correct one.

Re: New key/fob
I bought an ebay visteon 41787 and it arrived already. I followed the stpes in the thread, and it seems to work ok on the central locking and boot. Think I've found the key code, and going to get one of these, and a new case to make it look like new

Re: New key/fob
Looks like the right key blade. Save you from spending £13 on it, I can send you one of my blanks that I've got if you want? Exactly the same as that and i've got plenty going spare - so yours for the taking if you want it. Offer is extended to anyone else too if needed only takes me an envelope and a stamp and job's a good 'un
EDIT - mis-understood the eBay listing you linked, didn't realise they cut it for you too. Doh!

I did the last one with a Dremal, as the locksmith refused to cut a blank that he hadn't supplied, despite not having one in stock and it being a fortune to order

It's on a card that says "Key Code Card" so presumably it is, but it was with something that said about locking wheel nuts. 8 digit code sound right?

I know its been a while, but I've lost my 2nd pair of keys for my mazda, the Dealer said it will cost me nearly a 100£ to order me a new one. Please let me know if there is any other way to get a new pair of keys? Would a tower hill locksmith be able to make a new key for me?YORKSHIRE777 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 05, 2021 3:12 pmHow do I get a key/fob for my RX8 please
