Mmmmm. £6.25/m2 for blocks and £1,500 all-in? That is cheap. I’d have expected IRO £20 and £4,000 for a car-friendly 40m2 (less for a patio due to the cheaper sub-base and if you’re going for someone starting out on his own).

You need to have the 100mm blocks for the driveway so worth checking these are what he has quoted for.

That's my feeling.

He dug an exploratory hole last night and as the space is an old farm yard it is well and truly compacted and a mix of stone ballast (mainly flint) and sand. He took it to a depth of 250mm and the substrate was still fully compacted. His feeling is that we only need to go down 100mm and lay 50mm of sand on top of the membrane and then 50mm blocks.

He will whack at every stage as well.

Just waiting for a start date....followed by an appointment with the chiropractor for my back!

50 mm is the standard for domestic drives (Category 4), with 60 mm better but not essential. 80mm is recommended for heavier use areas such as commercial car parks and 100mm upwards used for heavier vehicle areas.

100mm sub-base is the minimum. It should be ok if your ground is compacted flint and sand.

Well the guy who laid the single car width drive at the last house certainly went OTT by using 100mm block pavers as it wasn’t actually wide enough to drive the car up any further than the front of the house!

100mm that is belt and braces.

Just had confirmation:

2000 blocks: £200
Sharp sand: £240 (I might shop around a bit for that)
Block cutter hire, cement, pavior sand, weed membrane: £110
Labour for 5 days: £750
Labourer 2 days:£200

Plus a skip which Mrs Smutty will organise as she has the contacts.

Have said I'd be grateful if he could do it in 4 days!

Don’t use 50 mm if your going to be jacking on the area although replacing the odd one or two if necessary is very easy.
60 mm is fine and if your having a labourer for two days as well then four days in total is not unreasonable.
The area of 40 M is only just a bit bigger than the minimum for a double garage.
Farm yards just keep putting fresh layers over the top so your base will be fine, I noticed your in an old farm house from the pics. Looks like you’ve had a lot of work done to it.
If it was me I’d be on a price though so 4 or 5 days would only make a difference to my profit :)

Thanks, Pete. Always happy to listen to advice, especially from folk who know more than me.

I'll speak to the guy about the blocks. It is his trade and he has been doing it a fair few years and is still working for a company but he is dipping his toe in the self-employed market. He and I will dig out to 100mm or more on the first weekend and his pal will come the second weekend for the more skilled work. You're spot on about the size - it is the width of our double garage and is the space where the two RX8s normally stand.

I did think about copying Tony's idea of having an aluminium tray for axle stands to sit in and for the trolley jack to roll on. Or maybe a sheet of ally plate. Even some 12mm ply would do, I think.

The barn is a labour of love - roofer just done two days and has another day to go. Carpenter just handed me a £480 bill for refurbishing the garage doors. I got the place for an absolute steal a few years back at the bottom of the market, cash buyer and with a suspected oil leak from an underground tank (which thankfully turned out to be a tenant with the heating on full blast 24/7 which explained the massive oil consumption).

50 mm is fine if you put a piece of ply etc under the jack and may well be fine anyway
60 mm is just an insurance policy, you only need to dig down enough to get your levels right assuming your on a good base as you don’t need much sand under them.
Bloke starting out on his own is ideal :thumleft:

Just the final tidy up to do but a job well done:
bp.jpg
Total costs:

blocks and other materials (cash) £300
8 yard skip £200
Sharp sand £115
Labour £950

This covers around 36 sq m of paving.

In addition, the paver's mate is a sparky so I got him to fit two outdoor up/down lights plus an LED light in the loft of the garage all included in his daily rate for labouring.

He's done such a good job that we are thinking of getting him back to take up the cheap flag stone pathway and patio and replacing them with block paving. That is about 12 sq m and will probably come to about £1000 all in.

Mrs Smutty has some exciting news breaking for her business so we will probably have to pump fundage into that for a few months, so the path will have to wait....although I can be impatient at times so I may well just go ahead and worry about the bank balance another day.

Oh, and I think I've miscalculated the height of the low wall. FFS.

There is a concrete lip in front of the blocks on the driveway side and I need to move some of the pebbles down the slope to get rid of the bump. I sprayed a sealant on it last night and will put another coat on today.
