Is this R3 sump any good?
This R3 sump has been listed on Facebook groups, and it was listed before a few weeks ago. I've been told I need to look at getting a new sump when I had it serviced at RRs as it is starting to corrode and go. I'm not in a massive rush, but this popped up and I guess they're not so common to come up used... clicky
Now when I was in touch with the dealer, they quoted me £315 + vodka and tonic. I know that others on the forum got theirs for around £250, and even Essex Rotary has them for £265 which is still a very significant sum... (Anyone know why my local Donny dealer gave me such a high price? Or did he just see me as a sucker. Not sure if there is a central price or what's going on... )
Im assuming it's used by the looks of it, but is there any precautions for buying a used sump? It looks good, but I guess looks can be deceiving. Any tips? He's listed it at £150 and not sure I want to pay that much even for a used sump but I might give him an offer if he could send it. Any help/tips appreciated and your opinions of new/used.
Cheers,
Harry

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Crikey, £315 is a LOT more than the £243 that was suggested recently: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=82579&p=1295935&hilit=sump#p1295963
Gonna call my local dealer and will let you know if I can get them to do it for a better price than you've been quoted. If I can get them to £250 +VAT do you want me to order a second one for you while I'm on the phone with them?

How much demand is there for those bottom plates?
They look very easy to manufacture and machine from Aluminium. Even with some improvements I'd be surprised if couldn't get something out the door for less than £250

There must be some demand given that the Mazda prices rise with demand.Ryan Rotary Performance wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 7:54 amHow much demand is there for those bottom plates?

I'd much rather buy from you than Mazda if you could produce something within a few months. Just can't wait forever as the sump dumping the oil is now a worry for at least 2 of us.
Happy to drive over to you or Scott if you need an R3 to measure one up.

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Yeaaaah... it made me do a double take when he said 315 to me. I had seen that post a while back and also that ER had it for £265incVAT (when I was looking at rear spats again hah ) so it is way off the mark.
I never really gave much thought to other options for R3 sumps, but if it's something that can be done then I'm interested. I've still got rebuild warranty with RR, so i'd have to check but I wouldn't think that changing from a Mazda sump would change anything on that front, still worth a check on my part. I'm on the same stance as Haydn as above pretty much - if it's possible in a few months and comes in lower / around Mazda's, then that's me sold.

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
The problem with getting one from ER is they don't keep it in stock and it's a special order item. Which translates to no fixed time frame which is a big vague for me given you pay up front.

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
From what I could figure it was in stock? Normally they have back order in green near the QTY box if not... might be wrong on that one as I haven't ordered from them before, but hmmm and yeah, having no fixed timeframe is a pain in the butt. Had that on my suspension from two different places I ordered (1st fell through) and that drove me nuts just thinking back to it
**Ok nope. I just looked hah - it's at the bottom of the description "This is a special order item and is subject to our special order T&C’s" not like on some other items where it's "Available on back order" near the QTY box**

The bottom plate is inexpensive, the sump is the annoying bit - if you're on about producing anything Mr Ryan

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Local dealer just quoted me £208 +VAT. But as it costs over £100 I have to go in and order it in person... which I can't do today (thanks Boris).
The price does change everyday but the variance we're seeing is ridiculous, and they couldn't predict what it will be tomorrow.

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
I realise I may have misunderstood the previous message from RRP, I didn't see the focus on bottom plate I thought it was referring to the sump - so it's only the Mazda sump as an option then?
That's pretty much what I was expecting price-wise Haydn. Rings out about £249.60 at 20% VAT. Might it just be my Stonacre Mazda that has a phobia of giving competitive rates? Is each dealer able to set whatever price they like then or something? I'm really confused as to how there could possibly be over 100 difference... £5-10 variances, yeah whatever - but more than that? Laughable

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Let's clarify it then. There's the lower part of the oil pan/sump. That's the part ER sell: http://essexrotarystore.com/product/gen ... 3-rx-8-r3/
I need the lower part of the oil pan/sump.
There's also the aluminium sump guard, which isn't part of or attached to the engine and should last forever unless folks use it to jump over speedbumps.

No problem. If it's the same (or within a few quid) then I'll order one for you as well and send it to you myself. If it's gone up again I'll leave it.HarSc wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 10:18 pmThat's the one I'm in for, the oil pan that holds all me oil. Apologies for my confusion above, my heads a shed today

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Ahem.
The person at Mazda assumed that my RX8 is a project car! Offended I was. But then I am replacing a rusty sump, so couldn't really argue.
I haven't got my 2 post lift yet so may save this job for you Pete. You lucky man

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Sorry Harry, bad news. Both sumps that I ordered were missing the magnet on the inside of the pan when I collected them. So the dealer ordered another 2 and they're both missing the internal magnet as well. It's not a separate part number and should come attached to the pan to attract the metal swarf, as you may have seen in the photos online.HarSc wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 10:18 pmThat's the one I'm in for, the oil pan that holds all me oil. The dealer is investigating what happened with Mazda (were they faulty, was the part revised etc), but that's 4 pans that have come through now without magnets and I've made 3 trips to the dealer. So in case it drags on I've gotten them to refund the order, and that means I won't be able to send one to you. So back to square one.
The pans did all have a manufacture date of 2020 on them. So maybe there was a bad batch and better ones with the magnet will filter through the supply chain in time. Sorry about that. Mine isn't that bad so I plan to wait it out.

Re: Is this R3 sump any good?
Okay, no worries - thanks for letting me know. That's a royal pain in the butt for us, but not your fault at all. Hope it hasn't been too inconvenient for you, but I guess it's not even the dealers fault as they're just ordering them in I'm just keeping an eye on mine for now as I'm not driving it much at all, so I'll probably hold on for a bit longer.New Duke wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 4:35 pmSorry Harry, bad news. Please do let me know if you're getting one in future, as I might piggyback again if that's still ok - or I might be back on the phone to try my luck again with my local dealer and see if time has changed their stance on with their prices and try my best to push them down... thanks very much for trying though Haydn, much appreciated
