Yup it’s for the automatic headlight adjustment on the rear if I’m not mistaken

Thanks everyone! is it just a case of buying a new bracket and fixing it on to fix it?

Yeah you can or you can do what the previous owner of my first Rx8 did and stick it back together with sealant Image

The bracket probably broke because the sensor seized, so you'd need the complete assembly.

There was a design change in 2006, so a used one from after that date should be fine.

Check with Honkytonk as he may have a spare on a subframe he got from me recently.

That link is a mot fail. Mine snapped and it was picked up during the mot. Got it replaced there and then to pass the mot.

I certainly should be "an MOT fail" but I suspect, if you removed the section that's swing around, you'd get away with it.
The levelling system does look for movement as part of its test, so no error lights, and as long as the sensor is fixed in a reasonable position, then the result should be okay for the dipped-beam check.

It would take a tester with a lot of experience and specific model knowledge to recognise that there should be a link on the rear as well as the front.

Not that I'd advise driving the car in this condition, in fact, if Honkytonk doesn't have one then I'd be recommending a call to Bigpete.

Trying to get a hold of one now, is it pretty straight forward to replace it's on the front passengers side

The part # I quoted is for the rear, though the front is similar.

Anyone breaking a 231 is likely to have a working one.

I looked for these a while back once rockauto's stock dried up and it seems they were common across manufacturers at some point. Plenty of places list pattern parts with cross-compatibility - has anyone tried one yet?

Who'd have known our cars have something in common with a Prius!

Edit - obviously this is just the potentiometer not the arm and bracket, and might not fit the newer models depending on what changed

Headlight auto-levelling systems always use a front and rear sensor... This isn't model specific...

A car cannot level the headlights on a front or rear sensor alone as it calculates the differential between front and rear to judge the attitude of the car...
