Attaching a numberplate to the bumper

Post by Ollie »

So sadly the way I use to attach my numberplate to the bumper of my car is just imo... Not reliable enough.. Its also put a scrag in the bumper paint from where its bounced about annoyingly. (Mounted to the L brackets number plate holder bottom passenger side).. So I'm considering using 3M double sided tape or possibly dual hook stuff that I've read about. Just wondering if anyone had any input?

Will be just below the passenger washer jet for the headlights until I figure somewhere else to mount it/another method of mounting it low.

On my old 8 I use to have my plate above the headlight washer but I just ended up drilling it through with some bolts as my bumper wasn’t painted very well.

One day the bolts came lose and all I had was some cheapo sticky pads which seemed to be okay but I had a set of metal pressed plates on it which kind of curved which I think helped to hold it on a bit better.

See I dont want to drill holes in the bumper so sticky pads seems ideal? If I can figure out a way to mount it below the oil cooler securely Id be so happy. The L bracket method for me just seems to fall off alot. :/

I recon if you can find a way to get a little bit of a curve into the plate then some sticky pad should work fine.

The issue is that if you don’t shape it a bit, the plate will come off of at least one of the parts it bends around. When I use to have my giulietta I had that issue with the factory point as I don’t want to drill my plates and ended up stacking like 10 sticky pads on top of each other which kinda worked but didn’t look the best up close.

Yeah I was thinking a hairdryer/heat gun and a slight bend would do wonders. On the 8 bumper today I took my current number plate and laid it flat against the place itll be mounted and the curvature isnt huge but... I could see it wanting to go back to natural shape eventually. So a very slight persuasion might do wonders? Then either 3M pads or 3M dual hooks... allegedly 3M dual hooks allow plate removal easily... So I could at least swap to show plates if I felt like it? Aha.

Thinking about it I heated the back hoping it would bend backwards but it bent forwards lol so carefully heated the front and watched it bend until it looked about right Image

I'll experiment on the old plate first. Got the new plate today. Just need to wash the car before I stick it on. :)

I bought a metal numberplate in the smallest possible legal size and mounted it with magnets to the L-Bracket incase I want to remove it for any reason, due to being made out of metal it was easy to bend slightly to follow the curve of the car.

I used strong doublesided tape at first to mount the bracket to the car but one sunny day it fell off so put some techscrews into the underside of the bumper for better security.

(the dirt you can see on the F is actually metal that the magnet behind the plate has attracted, have to clean the metal away surprisingly regularly).

This is what it looks like when the plate is pulled off, it takes quite a bit of force to break the magnetic attraction:

See that's a concern.. Ideally I want to possibly be able to remove it.. But for a respray over like changing it for the sake of it type thing.

vhb does come off, you just have to undo the bolts that hold your bumper on...
Thanks, Stu

Who needs a bumper anyway... LOL Though I have been looking at some of 3Ms dual sided tapes etc for such an application.
