bluetooth or adaptor?

Ok so ive got a new phone and unfortunately it doesnt have the 3.5mm aux port in it.

so whats the best way you've found? fm transmitter, bluetooth dongle or a usbc to 3.5mm cable?

Bluetooth adaptor into the AUX port for me too, although i've been getting some high frequency 'noise' when it's charging... Not sure if it's the supply from the car or the twin USB adaptor - anyone else have this problem?

This thing has built in noise isolation which only turns on with the ignition. For the money, it does the job well and gives decent sound quality (well, as much as you can hear over the Renesis and road noise, anyway).



I’d recommend it. It’s the best plug in BT adapter I’ve used. The only irritations are that the max call volume is lower than the max music playback. And it doesn’t always auto connect.

I use connects2 Bluetooth adapter which plugs into the rear of the headunit.
Depends on your firmware though.

I installed the Yatour Bluetooth adapter to work with my iPhone 11. Connections and sound quality is excellent and installation was simple.

I’m unable to skip the tracks on my phone with the car controls though. However as I’m generally listening to a playlist of a podcast it’s not an issue. Plus, is I need to I skip using the Apple Watch.

I have used the radio transmitter type in the past and they’re ok for a quick, easy fix. But sound quality is lacking a bit.

I've also got a Yatour on mine and yes sound quality is excellent
as Skendread says if you have the latest firmware on the head unit then it won't connect though

1 funny wrinkle to be ware of if you're playing music via the USB port of the SD card is the head unit will not work if you have more than 6 folders and you are limited to 99 tracks per folder as it treats it like its the CD player

otherwise the bluetooth FM adpators generally work well and give you a hands free option

Best way I've found is a Bluetooth head unit. No noise, no charging of dongles, and only a few quid more. I've had a couple and am currently using this one after ditching an Android touchscreen:

The noise when plugged in to usb and playing through the aux port on the r3 was ridiculous when I first tried it, a ground loop isolator (cheap and cheerful of Amazon and the like) fixed it.

Now have a Bluetooth receiver tucked away in the center console, connected to the aux in through the filter which works a treat. Bluetooth settings on the phone mean that's only used for music, car handles the hands free phone stuff.

I don't use youtube music. But I do use Amazon Music and the music app built into my phone, and yes on those the headunit buttons control tracks in the app. So if your phone sees youtube music as an audio app, it'll allow the headunit to control tracks over bluetooth (and display track info on the headunit).

It's the Sony WX920BT. The Android headunit I had before was made by Pumpkin (but it had issues). Sony one can be bought from Halfords:

It's a straight swap in a R3, like the OP has. But yeah to work in an S1 you need a more expensive fascia that routes the heater/climate control. Metra/Connects2 supply one but it's more expense than the simple fascia you need in the R3. It's doable, but costs about an extra £150 to do in an S1.

Once wired any aftermarket stereo or Android headunit will work. So even with the extra cost, in an S1 it's still cheaper than the sat nav tablet mod.

For the S1 heater controls there's an open source replacement for the Metra kit if you handy and happy to do a bit of wiring. Brings the cost down a fair chunk.

Photos of the Sony WX920BT as promised. (I was listening to a podcast about the drama surrounding 'Cuties'... not listening to the film audio . The WX920BT is a sturdy piece of kit and I'm very impressed by it:

Photo below of the Pumpkin Android unit I had previously. It was very versatile and ran full Android with GPS, bluetooth, WIFI, full app support etc. So made a handy sat nav and would simultaneously stream on any music app or Youtube for example. Similar to the tablet mod, just all-in-one:

But it wasn't well made, and was killed by the engine bay heat on a track day:

I had wanted a trusted brand Android unit all along. But at the time they were all limited to Auto Auto and CarPlay, neither of which had the full support I wanted. So I had to go for a cheap internet brand like the Pumpkin. Finally though it looks like Pioneer do a full android removable tablet. I'm very happy with the Sony headunit I have, but if I was looking to replace it then I'd be looking at this:
