Hi all,

Is it even possible to buy an RX8 231 for under £1500 without it being someone else’s scrap metal?

It’s getting harder and harder, patience may be required!

I’m desperate for one now lol. Iv wanted an rx8 231 for easily the last 10 years but for what ever reason never had chance. Either that was because they used to be in the £2000-£3000 range or they’d be available when I’d just bought a car and was poor.

Trying to keep my eye out as much as possible now. Preferably in black

Be warned that buying an RX8 at that price without “knowledge” could easily cost you as much again within weeks. As a minimum expect to spend £500 immediately on coils, plugs and oils.

Ahh...I noticed a lot of sale posts online stating new coils etc

The trouble is that most* "new coils" are barely worth their weight, in chocolate.

*Numerically more common

Unless the new coils are a Revision C from a reliable trader, not Tom and Dick on eBay or RRP Mkll or BHR then “new coils” means nothing.

More than likely any car at that price would be for the early cars and they can be up to 17 years old so rusting body work can be a problem and that can be expensive to sort out.

I'd say while its possible to get a car for £1500 you will be very lucky for it not to need parts almost right away

to get a good car which has been cared for , with no rust, engine in good shape and you can just jump in and drive you need to spend more like £3000

It is worth considering a 192 depending on what you want from the car, there’s not that much difference and the 192 tend to sell for less due to the perceived lower desirability

I always remember the day in 2004 when I went to collect my first RX-8 a new 190 car in brilliant Black with red and black interior and whilst I was checking it out on that nice sunny day a young couple came along and said "Is that your car have you just bought it?" to which I replied "yes I have" together they just said "it is such a beautiful car you are so lucky we are so envious!"

Just because it was a 190 car doesn`t make it any less desireable IMO and having had both now I didn`t for one minute regret having the 190 car.

I get the point about 192’s but the RX8 is renowned for its ability to rev so why not have the ultimate version that can go up to 9,5K?
However if it is being bought as a project then absolutely go for a 192 as there are some great sounding developments being made by RRP which may make it the tuneable Renesis of choice.

192s also come in some very very lovely colours too which is nice.

£1,100 3 years ago. Not much wrong with it, although not the cleanest

Ok so iv had a little bump in my budget as of next week. I now have £2000-£2500 and have no clue what I’m doing to be honest. The guys I spoke to at a car performance shop near me basically just said “RX8? Ha chocolate engines them pal stay clear!”

Iv obviously heard/read about the rotary engine a little and how people seem to report this hot start issue problem.

All I know is I want the 231 version, in black that is as perfect as possible for its age/price.

should get something decent for that.

i sold a 05 with low miles (back to its original owner, long story...) for £1300 or so a couple of years ago. id get £2k for it now, so you should do ok.

I’m just terrified of buying a RX8 that seems brill ok the test drive. Then two weeks later bang massive engine failure lol. I know you run that risk with all cars privately but with the RX8 engine stories I’ve heard it’s worrying me more. I’m just obsessed with them

then buy from a specialist with a warranty and compression test readings. you should manage it on your budget. you wont get a perfect car but you will get a good starting point that wont go bang as you drive it down the road.

Iv heard about the compression test. That’s something I’ll definitely be looking for

Shame your budget isn't higher as I may be tempted to part with mine.

It's done under 20k miles, 231 in black ;)
