That's sun damage to the plastic surface.

This is very common in the sunny states in the US but less common in the UK, so far....

Contact the dealer and ask them suggest why it has happened and that you believe it has been caused by their technicians.

Thought that myself but it really has just occurred and the only disturbance of the area would have been during the airbag replacement and the weather has been dull since certainly not in the high temps, see what the dealership says.

The sun damage makes the plastic brittle so it might just have been the disturbance that's then broken it.

Got to be worth a follow-up with the dealer.

How long ago was the work done?

No, not a member, but I do know who it is. I became aware via a Facebook post.

I intervened very recently, with the agreement of the owner, to alert Mazda UK to his case. It was a leaking fuel tank, post recall. The dealer arranged for the recovery pickup and returned the car later that day. Mazda UK sent a senior tech from their Dartford HQ to the dealership to investigate and oversee the remedial work. The last I heard, all was good and the owner was happy with the outcome.

I did point the owner to our club and forum forum, suggesting he takes a look :thumleft:

Malcom, Thank you for the work that you have done on this. I have never received a recall for the fuel tank. It is an R3 model Do you know if the recall applies to R3 models? Thanks

After holding back on this because of the problems I finally succumbed to the air bags and the fuel tank recall.

My local dealer closed last year who were poor anyway. This left Haytons at Carlisle who have just taken on the dealership so I discounted them. Next nearest is PV Dobson 50 odd miles from me near Kendal. The car was booked in a few weeks ago for yesterday, I informed the service manager of the recent bulletin - he was not aware of it but would check. He did say the techs had replaced several without any issue.
Yesterday, dropped the car off and got a new Dacia Duster in return. Spoke to the service manager again, still no knowledge of the latest bulletin but continued to assure me that they knew what they were doing. In return I informed him that I would be filling the tank and if there was any problem they would be recovering the car and Mazda UK would be involved.

Car collected 5 hours later, filled up at the nearest garage, removed the seat squab and cover - NO LEAKS.

Not a very interesting story but many thanks to Malcolm for raising this issue. It does look as if the competence of the individual tech is the main issue.

Yep, very unimpressed they ignored the correct procedure. Had you found a serious leak on the petrol station forecourt it could have been difficult.

However, pleased to hear all was OK.

I have a question for the membership relating to the air bag recall - when I had mine done, nearly immediately after the airbag light started coming on. My instant reaction was to book it back in because clearly it's directly related to the recall work. Turned out it was the common "clean the connectors under the seat" issue, however they still charged me £120 for the pleasure. I have complained till blue in the face that they should be covering this as it is to do with the airbags and happened immediately after they did the air bag recall work. Have got a genuine complaint here, or is this just unlucky and I need to suck it up? At the moment I'm adamant that the dealership has ripped me off (Arnold Clark South St Mazda, Glasgow).

Did they vacuum out the interior of the car after doing the job, either to clean up the mess or as a courtesy valet?

Vacuuming under the seat is by far the most common cause of the issue

Quite possibly - Arnold Clark always do a wash and front seat vacuum, but I'm not sure if they do under the seats. I'll find out...

Sounds like Malcolm needs to drop David an email.. I'd just refuse to accept the car until they follow the appropriate procedure. Likely after they have had a reminder from DWG.

They're working from an old printed copy of the Service Notice, which means that not only have they not picked-up about the refill but, depending how long ago it was printed, they will have also missed many/all of the other "enhancements" since the recalls were initiated.

There's no excuse for that [-X

It's irritating this is still happening

I've just sent Dan the info he needs to show Edwards the error of their ways.

The Service Managers at the Mazda dealerships should all be aware of the revised procedure, but they may not have told the reception staff who take the customer calls

I had another case like this a few months back. The receptionist refused to agree that the tank would be filled. When the Service Manager was contacted by Mazda UK on the day, the Service Manager couldn't apologise enough and the car owner ended up getting a free tank refill by way of apology from the dealership (a generosity previously unheard of ;) ).

Re: Worcester Dealer (Edwards)

Post by Delanor » 18 Jul 2018, 13:35

Another extremely poor Mazda dealer - my RX-8 was booked in for a serious recall (fuel pump fire risk) a friend followed me in his car to this dealer (a 10 mile trip) and I left my car with them, two and a half hours later I received a phone call to tell me they could not complete the recall as their "Qualified Mazda Technician" has not turned up for work!
So a Mazda, Volvo and Kia multi franchise car dealer didn`t have a "Qualified Technician" to change simple seals on a fuel pump, even their service assistant seemed to have little knowledge about the reason for the recall.

To add insult to injury they showed absolutely no concern whatsoever after it cost us for our two cars to complete a 60 mile round trip for nothing due to this fiasco and then with little shown urgency they could only book my car in again after another three weeks (so much for me and my families safety in case of fire from a leaking fuel pump!)
I was informed that the service manager would call me - even that was too much trouble for them!
For a main Mazda dealer this was absolutely shocking service!
Their website states:
"With a wealth of knowledge, expertise and unrivalled customer care. Edwards is here to help"

TBF with respect to the above, I've used them for the airbag recall on the R3 and it was fine, they even chatted to me about the bridgeport, but that is less than reassuring about the fuel pump repair... We'll see what happens tomorrow.

As said Malcolm has sent me the right info to go in there armed with and I'm going to explain to them that I'll refuse to collect the car unless they have filled the tank and tested for leaks. Or maybe I'll wait until I'm there to collect it and try my luck for some free fuel...

It's worth noting that I've explained the effort that the club has gone to (OK, mainly Malcolm!) around the serious issue of leaking fuel tanks and that the advice from Mazda UK is to fill and check the tank after the procedure has been completed, but we shall see.

Perhaps I'll end up with a leaky tank and get internet famous and sell my story to The Sun for 50p and a packet of opal fruits...?!

Post by Dr. FrankenRex »

So, my experience with Edwards wasn't flawless, but wasn't awful.

I dropped the car off at 08:30 and then received a call about 2pm to say it had all been done. I asked if the tank had been filled to check for leaks and was advised, for the 4th time, that "That isn't part of the replacement procedure". I explained that I was unhappy collecting the car until it had been filled - at my cost - to ascertain if there were no leaks. After multiple chats with the 'master technician' it was agreed that they would fill the car at a cost of £1.32 per litre to check for leaks. After they had done this they proceeded (I can only presume out of spite) to go over the car with a fine tooth-comb to find every little thing wrong with it they could - which I'm actually grateful for as 3 of the springs have snapped which weren't picked up on the MOT - more on that later...

However, I'll report back if there are any other issues, but they've sent me a video with both fuel tank access panels off and there is no sign of any leakage - so as far as doing the work goes, it looks like they've done a good job :)

EDIT: To add, I fed this back to Casey who has in turn fed it back to Mr DWG at Mazda. They are going to reach out to Edwards to 'confirm' the new process with them which should make future visits by other owners a little more slick as they only filled the tank because I pushed them repeatedly.

I also asked them to give me a quote for 4x new PZ springs for a giggle :D
