UPDATE 3/21: **SAFETY ALERT: Fuel Tank recall - Fuel Leaks & Other Issues"

Post by casey »

7 JANUARY 2021 UPDATE ON PAGE 6 OF THIS TOPIC REPRODUCED HERE:

I'm delighted to have received an email from David W-G at Mazda UK a few minutes ago. The key content of which was:

We (Mazda UK) have made immediate changes to the online Technical Bulletin that all dealers should use when doing repairs. For info, we specify that dealers don’t print out repair procedures to use with future jobs so that any updates to the process can be picked up each time. The updates include new instructions around leak checking and importantly, that this will need to be with a full fuel tank.

He goes on to say, "Mazda UK or the dealer can’t pay for the fuel (DVSA deem this as an incentive and we aren’t allowed to incentivise recall work) so there will be the fuel bill to pay for of course."

I have replied that as long as the price per litre is reasonable, then I can't see this should be an issue for owners.

Additionally, he has said:

"My Technical Manager is arranging for the Mazda Repairer network to be contacted to understand the greater scale of the problem highlighted post repair. We will priority target those dealers highlighted in your correspondence where we see from your feedback there has been a faulty repair, but it will also be important we speak to Technicians from other dealers as they may have seen the same problem but fixed prior to giving back to the owner."

I don't think we could have reasonably expected a better outcome than this. It's a shame that Mazda UK didn't react sooner, but once David W-G got onto the case it's taken less than a week for serious action to taken. It's certainly done a lot to restore my faith in Mazda's after-sales care.

I now strongly urge any owner with this outstanding recall to get it done. I would recommend you check, when booking the car in, that the new procedure of filling the tank to check for leaks will be performed as per the recent Technical Bulletin.

Apart from this recall changing-out parts which might lead to a serious fuel leak, owners also benefit from a new fuel filter. We know, from experience, that these filters are clogging with age**, so it solves another potentially expensive maintenance job. Plus, owners run the risk of having their insurance invalidated if the DVSA record shows this safety recall work has not been done.

**Fuel starvation has occurred in certain cornering conditions with less than 1/3 tank of fuel. This manifests with the engine losing power for a few seconds. Extensive investigation by RX-8 OC members has concluded that clogging of the fuel filter with increasing mileage is the cause.

ORIGINAL POST FOLLOWS:

There are a few topics scattered on the forum on the subject of this Mazda Recall:

AH023A Fuel Leak At Fuel Pump Discharge Pipe

2020-08-22 13.45.53.jpg
There have been a small, but disturbing number of RX-8 owners who have had this work performed by a Mazda dealership, only to find mild to severe fuel leaks when brimming their tank upon completion of the recall.

Some owners have also reported that the fuel gauge no longer reads correctly, or in one case not at all. The problems there appear to be;
- trapped/damaged wiring
- loose connections
- bent float arms
- components accidentally swapped from one side of the tank to the other, even though they're obviously different.

Here is one of the more severe leaks (on my car, first fill after the recall work)!):

The leaks do not seem to manifest themselves unless the fuel tank is full. After Mazda had attempted to fix my leak, it was only the last 2 litres of fuel that revealed a leak still existed, albeit less severe than in the video above.

The problem is, we have no idea as to the scale of the issue. Is there just a very small number of cars suffering these leaks, or is there a more widespread issue?

If you have had this work completed, I would not recommend brimming your tank without immediately checking for a fuel leak from either/both of the two tank sealing rings at the top of the fuel tank, situated under the rear seats. If you feel confident, then there is a simple process to check for leaks, requiring only a crosshead screwdriver. You can follow this procedure:

Pull hard on the front, lower edge of both rear seat squabs to detach them from the two clips holding each squab in place. Lift out both squabs to reveal the fuel tank inspection covers on each side.

This is the view on the passenger side:
Passenger side Fuel Cover.jpg
Unscrew the four crosshead screws holding each cover plate in place, placing the screws somewhere safe.
Passenger Side Fuel Tank Cover Close.jpg
Squeeze the small, black plastic clip holding the cable harness to the covers on each and place the covers safely to one side.

You will now have a clear view of both tank sealing covers. This is the view on the driver's side.

Check for any signs of fuel leaks. If none, go and fill your tank with fuel until the pump cutout triggers, ideally, checking for leaks as your tank approaches full. Should you experience a leak, you will need to have thought in advance of your options!

1. Maybe choose a filling station where you can easily push your car to a safe location at the station.
2. If fuel is leaking under the car, the staff at the filling station should be able to offer some help with sand or similar.
3. Ideally, you will have a valid breakdown cover, through which you can arrange to have your car picked up and taken back to the Mazda dealer for rectification, or another garage of your choice.

I cannot recommend you drive your car if you do discover a petrol leak, so plan carefully for what you will do if you find a leak.

The club committee have a meeting scheduled for 27 September and we will review the issues relating to this recall. To help us, it would be extremely helpful if you can post up below:

1. Have you received this recall notice?
2. Have you had the work completed?
3. If you have had the recall completed, which dealership did the work and roughly when?
4. If you have received the recall and not had the work done, what is your reason?
5. If you have had the work done, have you experienced any leaks?
6. If you have had the work done and not experienced any leaks, have you completely filled your tank at least once?
7. Did you experience any other issues, such as fuel the gauge reading incorrectly? If so, please give details.

For example, my answers would be:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Underwoods Mazda, Colchester, Aug 2020
4. N/A
5. Yes
6. N/A
7. No other issues noted

We am currently aware of 7, possibly 8, cars which have suffered leaks and I shall be PM’ing those owners to make them aware of this topic.

On behalf of the entire RX-8 owning community, I thank you in advance if you can help us clarify the scale of this issue. The committee can then decide if the scale warrants action to further safeguard owners. Mazda UK have been alerted to the issue, but have, to date, chosen not to get involved, placing the responsibility for workmanship squarely with the individual dealers.

Dear whoever it may concern,

I am an owner of a 2008 Mazda RX8 (registration W8 ERE) in the Poole, Dorset area. In reference to the recent recall work of this particular model, the car has visited the Mazda Canford Cliffs garage 7 times. This in itself is quite frankly shocking, as one would hope the work being carried out should be correct on the first attempt. The most recent visit lasted 2 and a half days, which is a further inconvenience.

The fuel gauge is now reading worse than before, after being filled with fuel by the Mazda technicians, which lead to the car running out fuel last week while the gauge was reading 1/4 of a tank. Prior to this, the first half of the tank provided 136 miles (see attached photo), with a further 58 miles before running empty, proving the magnitude of the issue.

I am disheartened with the service I have received so far, despite my passion for the wonderful cars. Seeing as the issue itself was originally a recall from the company yourselves, it is expected that the technicians and the service provided would be specialised and effective.

I would like to know what the plan is regarding the matter, and would appreciate it being resolved as soon as possible. We have an upcoming trip around Europe in the car, including a track day, which would be affected by the fuel gauge issue in the car greatly.

Please get back to me on the matter, feel free to call me on 07528665000.

Many thanks,

Stephen Griffin

Good afternoon Mr Griffin,

I have tried to contact the mobile number on our database and I was unable to get through.

I am following up on your vehicle which is currently at Magna Motors Christchurch. I have spoken to Neil in service who advised they need to carry out further diagnostics on the car and they have ordered new fuel tank unit to see if that would resolve the current issue with the vehicle. I will work with the dealership to make sure any repair are carried out as efficiently as possible.

If there is anything else I can do to help, please feel free to reply to this email or call me on 03457 48 48 48.

Yours sincerely,
They had the car for approx one week eventualy finding the trapped wire ,any more recalls i wouldnt know where to take it .
cheers steve

5.yes 18th may 2018,jacked up rear of car to do rear brakes and fuel started to pour from tank...called cov mazda who said bring it in and we will have a look. i refused to drive it and was then told to get it recovered then.
i called mazda uk who told me not to drive it and they would arrange recovery...2 hrs later a flatbed arrived and took it to cov mazda. i called them saturday morning and they said they could not find anything...the leak had mysteriously cured itself overnight.i collected it and it seemed ok.
fast forward to 18th june i filled up and parked in my garage, next morning i was met with a garage full of petrol fumes. i pushed it outside and removed the seat squab and cover plate to find this...
074.jpg
i took it back and they had a 3rd attempt to fix a leak it never had till they got hold of it...so far so good.

1st garage recall visit last year, car had very heavy petrol smell after.
2nd garage recall visit last year, replaced O Ring , still smelling of petrol.
3rd garage recall visit last year, checked and could not find anything wrong.

Back on road March this year,
Filled petrol tank to the max,
I lost 1/4 of a tank in two miles.

4th garage visit two months ago.
Replaced O ring again, no problems so far.
I also filled tank to the max as before , All good with no issues to report.

Re: **SAFETY ALERT: Fuel Tank recall - Fuel Leaks & Other Issues"

Post by fishywick »

1. Have you received this recall notice? - yes
2. Have you had the work completed? - no
3. If you have had the recall completed, which dealership did the work and roughly when? - n/a
4. If you have received the recall and not had the work done, what is your reason? - fearful that the work will not be completed correctly and with the required competence. This could potentially leave the car in a dangerous state as evidenced by some of the cases above. In short I may well be left with a car that has more faults than the ones the recall notice was designed to resolve.
5. If you have had the work done, have you experienced any leaks? - n/a
6. If you have had the work done and not experienced any leaks, have you completely filled your tank at least once? - n/a
7. Did you experience any other issues, such as fuel the gauge reading incorrectly? If so, please give details.- n/a

Casey, here is our response:-

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Clevedon Mazda, Somerset, Oct 2018
4. N/A
5. Yes, Major fuel leak the first time that the tank was refilled after the work had been completed. We were going on an RX8 owners club social meet and had our 6 yr old daughter with us who was sitting in the rear passenger seat, so basically on top of the leaking fuel tank.
The car was recovered to Clevedon Mazda who repaired it and we don't appear to have any issues since, but very concerned over what could have happened.
6. N/A
7. No other issues noted

Hi guys, new to the forum but after hearing about this recall going wrong for what seems like quite a few RX8 owners I thought I'd offer my positive experience I had doing the recall.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Stoneacre Mazda Doncaster February 2019
4. N/A
5. No
6. Yes, countless times.
7. No

I've driven approximately 8,000 miles since the recall and I always fill my RX8 full everytime I visit a petrol station. Although I've never taken the back seats out to check for any fuel, I have never smelt fuel while driving or whilst it is parked on my drive and there has never been a puddle of fuel left on the driveway either.

I was also promised a £100 voucher from mazda UK for my issues with £60 charge of parts to get my car back, which of course, I never received!
