When the garage told me my car needed a new cat I assumed the insides had crumbled, turns out it passed the emissions test and just has a gaping hole in the bottom...
Excuse the rubbish photo, it's a screenshot of a video from my phone that I slid under the car.
Assuming the insides are still ok, does anyone know if these are these still worth good money as scrap?
I'm now trying to decide what to replace it with since it's impossible to get hold of a used OEM one and I'm reluctant to spend money on a cheap aftermarket one (garage can supply and fit for around £275).
Does anyone in the Bristol area have one that I can borrow to get through the MOT?

If the cat internals are sound Why don’t you take it off and get a patch welded.
You can remove the heat shield carefully and refit after the repair.
Obviously be careful not to bang it around too much whilst working on it.

I got 500 for mine before lockdown I'd be careful what cat goes on as some aren't very good for our engines, is the hole leaking?
If so ide get it welded if it's just a hole in the heat sheild it shouldn't affect mot

Hi Josh,
How’s you and Mikey doing ?
I have a brand new cat from MRP still wrapped from new which you can have for £250
Also a very low milage Mazda cat £500
Have some big car ramps in the drive if you want to drive up and fit
Regards
Pete

Re: Cat caused MOT failure, but not for emissions...
I don't think it's just a hole in the heat shield so it must be leaking a bit. I'll take it off when I have time and get a better idea of what state it's in, both inside and out.
I may be able to get it patched but if it's worth loads as scrap it might not be worth fixing.
I'd love to get £500 for it but I'm guessing the price has dropped since then, has anyone done it more recently?
Unfortunately I'm not sure how much longer this car will be on the road, I can't really justify the running costs for the amount of use it gets and it's not going to be worth much to anyone else because of the state of the bodywork and a few of it's other quirks.
It's been part of our family for more than 10 years though so I won't make that decision lightly, I just don't want to put too much more money into it at the moment

Re: Cat caused MOT failure, but not for emissions...
Thanks for the offers Pete, trust you to come to the rescue again! We're all fine thanks!
I'll try and get mine off on the drive first and see what state it's in, then I'll make a decision from there.
I'm working from home for the foreseeable future so not in a great hurry to fix it. I'm tempted to just take it off the road for a bit to save on tax and insurance and get it going again next year

If the cat itself was perforated you would definitely know about it from the horrendous noise it would be making
