Front caliper play

Post by firium » Tue Aug 04, 2020 11:25 am

Hi all :)

Hopefully this is the right place to put this, happy to move it if not.

Yesterday I took my baby out on Castle Combe and had a blast nailing her about at silly speeds. Even on a stock setup, these cars are so much fun on track :D

Part way through the day the car developed a fairly loud clunk when entering heavy braking, and occasionally when cornering. It was powerful enough that it could be felt through the wheel and pedals. I continued for a while, however the problem persisted and worsened, so decided to retire the car for the day.

Checking over the front suspension this morning, I found the driver's side front calliper has quite a lot of play, much more so than the passenger's side. Video of this (you may need to turn the volume up a little):

This is particularly worrying as I have a day at Llandow booked for Thursday, so am hoping to resolve at short notice :?

I was wondering if this could be the source of the issue - ball joints/tie rods/drop links all seem solid - and if so where the best place would be to source replacement parts at short notice. I couldn't find replacement pins/mounts on Euro car parts.

Any help much appreciated :thumleft:

It looks as if the whole hub is moving
I'll send you an email through the club (usually ends up in spam)

Thanks for the replies chaps :)

There is definitely play in the calliper, but good point about the hub moving. Unfortunately I’m away from the car today so can’t check it over, but it looks like I’ll need to look at the steering linkage etc more closely. I’ve got a set of replacement slide pins arriving today, so hopefully able to rule any calliper movement out.

A mate I’m going with has said he’s happy to share his mx5 if I’m not happy with my car, so at least I have a plan B!
